What are dislocations?

Joint displacement.

Dislocations
A dislocation of a joint occurs when the 2 matching surfaces of a joint are no longer in contact. This is typically quite painful and requires immediate medical attention. The joint will need to be reduced, in order for the 2 joint surfaces to come together. This often requires some form of anesthesia or sedation. After a dislocation, the joint may be unstable and require immobilization.

What causes jaw dislocations?

Many reasons

Malocclusion
A malocclusion, opening too wide, grinding your teeth, chewing too much gum, having oral surgery done can cause dislocation of the tmj. Any one or more of the above situations will do it. These are the most common causes, there are plenty of others.

Why might I frequently have shoulder dislocations?

Laxity

Extremity-joint-shoulder
Ligaments hold bones together. Some people have ligaments that are looser than other people, allowing for more movement in joints. This is when people are described as "loose-jointed" or "double-jointed". Other times, an injury may have damaged the shoulder joint, and the structures that hold it in place may need to be repaired. Best to have it checked out.

Dr. James Bicos answered:

Could shoulder dislocations lead to arthritis?

Yes

The more times a shoulder dislocates, the higher the likelihood that you will develop arthritis. Remember that people without dislocations also develop arthritis, so you are not alone. Recurrent shoulder dislocations is a debilitating problem that can be treated. I would recommend seeing an Orthopedic specialist in shoulders.

why might someone be succeptible to knee cap dislocations/subluxations?

Anatomy

Knee
The anatomy of a persons knee can lead to knee cap (patellar) dislocations. Patellar stability is dependent on: bony constraint of the femoral trochlea; MPFL, medial retinaculum, vastus medialis oblique. Any of these may be disrupted or dysplastic in patients with patellar instability

Is surgery the only way to prevent further patella dislocations?

Not always

Joint_dislocation
Quadricps muscle strengthening, IT band stretching, and physical therapy sometimes works. Taping may play a role in the short term. Kinesiotape and the like. Great physical therapy is usually worth a try before surgery. See a rehab doctor or sports medicine doctor.... second opinions too if needed.

How are dislocations treated with first aid?

Immobilize first

First_aid
Immobilization in place until a trained medical professional is available. Check for a pulse or normal color of the furthest point from the dislocation and relay that to the personnel. Compromised circulation may dictate your assistance as instructed by the professionals. I

What is a good brace that prevents shoulder dislocations?

Not great options

Open-uri20121116-15057-1lwwrod
Most people who want a brace for shoulder instability use it for sports. Those braces restrict shoulder motion to a safe zone where the shoulder won't dislocate. They can be very restrictive. Depending on the sport and position played, this restriction may or may not allow appropriate participation. If you need a brace for everyday activities, see your ortho doc.

Dr. Marc Schneider answered:

How can you stop frequent shoulder dislocations?

May need surgery

Dislocations
If the shoulder continues to dislocate after a course of physical therapy and/or activity modification, an unstable shoulder typically requires surgery to tighten up the labrum, capsule and ligaments.
