Please clarify why c-diff happens more often after ending antibiotics vs. While still on them? Tested for c-diff while on meds, neg. Now done, worried

Please clarify why c-diff happens more often after ending antibiotics vs. While still on them? Tested for c-diff while on meds, neg. Now done, worried

No need to worry: There's a difference between Clotridium difficile symptoms and testing. When antibioitcs suppress other bacteria, it can take several days for C diff to grow to enough to cause symptoms, which might happen even after the antibiotic is stopped. But if a stool test was negative, then you had no C diff in your intestines at all. In that base, once stopping it you are at little or no risk of symptoms. ...Read more

Why was I given a different antibiotic for c. Dificile?

The 1st didn't work: Clostridium difficile can be "difficile" to treat and might not respond to the first round of antibiotics (usually Metronidazole or vancomycin) it some times takes weeks of antibiotics to treat this infection, in fact. Stick with the new antibiotic and good luck! ...Read more

Can food cause C Diff? Like if beef you buy that had antibiotics? Or processed foods?

Contamination: Food can be contaminated with c.diff bacteria and contribute to it's spread. There presently isn't a clear link between antibiotic use in beef and c.diff proliferation, but in theory it's possible, just as there is some suggestion of antibiotic use in beef and the spread of drug resistant bacteria. ...Read more

What is risk of c diff if repeatedly treated with antibiotics? Also risk of antibiotic resistance?

What is risk of c diff if repeatedly treated with antibiotics? Also risk of antibiotic resistance?

Uncommon but real: This is an uncommon but real issue. Risk varies with the type/duration and intensity of antibiotic use (IV vs oral, etc.) Many centers do stool surveillance cultures to spot this in higher risk patients. Resistance is an everyday issue today which drives us to be selective & specific on antibiotic use. The risk of an individual having to deal with these is part of dealing with healthcare today ...Read more

Is nitroufrantoin a broad or narrow spectrum antibiotic? Taking 50mg 4x per day for a week. Worried about C.diff

Relatively narrow.: nitrofurantoin is a common antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections. For infections which are sensitive to it, it does a good job of treating them. Although it is possible to get C. difficile from any course of antibiotics, it is unlikely given a seven day course of nitrofurantoin. Stick with your antibiotic, and take it until it is gone. Good luck. ...Read more

I had d&c yesterday. And I badly needed a beer. Is it okay to drink a beer or two? Yes I am on Antibiotic for 5 days

I had d&c yesterday. And I badly needed a beer. Is it okay to drink a beer or two? Yes I am on Antibiotic for 5 days

No, it's not ok and: I am more concerned about why ANYBODY "badly needs" a beer during time of stress. It is one thing to like alcohol but it is much more worrisome to me to "NEED" it. Alcohol, even in small amounts, increases the chances of bleeding, which is already a risk after a d&c, and also interferes with the metabolism of many medications, including some antibiotics. It also increases chances of infection. ...Read more
