Dr. Randy S. Baker answered:

I have chrons disease, which hasn't gone into remission yet, taking 400mg of cymzia every 4 weeks, should I avoid taking vitamin C ? Everybody around me seems to be getting sick, just curious if vitamin C is bad for my intestines. From what I understand,

Vitamin C OK

Open-uri20120929-18466-f23dkr
There are no known interactions between Vit. C and Cymzia. Vitamin C is unlikely to irritate your intestines unless you take a very high amount. It is safe to take 1000 mg at a time a few times a day. Some people sensitive to the ascorbic acid form will do better with buffered Vit. C. The best-absorbed form of C is Lypsospheric C- see http://www.livonlabs.com Also consider supplemental zinc.

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered:

Studies show vitamin D can help reduce symptoms of chrons disease. Newer ones claim deficient people may have longer lifes. Is their truth to either?

Media science

Crohns_disease
The CMAJ study was of very old folks and found a correlation that is almost certainly the result of some variable other than vitamin D intake (likely a variant in metabolism.) Severe Crohn's interferes with vitamin D absorption, likely explaining the effect. The media distort this stuff into "news" and this confuses everybody. If you have Crohn's or not, consider a vitamin D supplement.

Dr. Abby Caplin answered:

Causes of chrons disease?

Not known yet

Crohns_disease
The cause seems to be a combination of genetics (different immune defects) and environmental triggers. The subtypes of Crohn's disease may also have different immune defects, and for this reason people may respond differently to treatments. Though much more is known now about CD, we still don't know the cause. But stress and some foods can make it worse. Decreasing stressors can help a lot.

How do I know if I have chrons disease?

Crohn's diagnosis

Blood_tests
The symptoms from Crohn's range from very severe to very mild. If your primary doctor suspects Crohn's they'll usually get some basic blood tests - CBC, ESR, chemistry panel, liver tests, CRP, but then most likely refer you to a GI specialist for a colonoscopy. The doctor will look for ulcerations, other signs of inflammation, and will do a biopsy, which will help with the diagnosis of Crohn's.

Dr. Michael E. Ein answered:

How often is apendicitis misdiagnosed as chrons disease.

Not uncommonly

Appendicitis
Crohn's disease frequently involves the terminal ileum which is right next to the appendix. Crohn's inflammation here can easily be mistaken for appendicitis. A CT scan before surgery can often differentiate between the two.

What medication do you take for chrons disease?

Stop smoking

Crohns_disease
No medication will be as useful as stopping smoking. There are many anti-inflammatory meds available and these can be adjusted for you by a good gastroenterologist.
