I have a random bruise under my big toenail, as it appears. I didn't hurt it, but I just saw it today when I took off nail polish. Any suggestions?

Microtrauma: Your toenail is most likely being bruised because of how your big toe functions. You get too much pressure on the toe and it traps the nail bed between the hard nail and the bone, causing a bruise. There is a solution for this which involves rebalancing the mechanics of your foot. There are many podiatrists in your area that can help. I have offices in McKinney and Prosper, TX. ...Read more

There is a blue/black spot under my big toenail and I don't know what it is. I removed my nail polish today and saw it, and am now very concerned.?

Photo documentation.: A black/ blue spot under the nail in a 16 year old is probably nothing more than a bit of dried blood trapped under the nail. This could be the consequence of a minor bump of the toe of a pressure injury. Without actually seeing it, I guess it could be something else, but I doubt it. To remove all concern, you might have a physician take a look at it. ...Read more

What is the best over-the-counter remedy for toenail fungus? Is it okay that I use nail polish? They look yellow and terrible.

Toenail fungus: There is no good otc treatment for toenail fungus. The laquers work slightly better than the creams, but it will basically only slow the process down. These are now available cheaply as generics (about $30 for a 6 week course). ...Read more

Toenail fungus: terbinafine cream is for topical (skin) antifungal treatment and will not penetrate into the toenail for effective treatment. Specific toenail products are used due to components that penetrate into the hard keratin structure of the nail. I recently took my toe nail polish off after a couple weeks and found one of my big toes had a black spot. Is it a fungus or a bruise?

Most likely bruise: Nail trauma is common, whether from repetitive impact from running or just bumping into something.
