Membrane sweep: Hello, membrane sweep separates the membranes of the sac around the baby from the lower end of the uterus just inside the cervix and is a old trick to get the labor started. The brown d/c is altered blood from the procedure and the unpleasant smell may be from a pre-existing infection or just blood in the vagina. Hi I'm 40+3d overdue. Had my second membrane sweep on Friday and now it's Monday and I'm still discharging Brown mucus, lots. Normal? No contractions.

Yes, unfortunately: This is exactly why I am not a fan of "membrane sweeps". It is unnecessarily traumatic, arguably is an infection risk, and does very little to stimulate labor. On a side note, 42+ weeks is "overdue" and you are simply past your due date at present. ...Read more

What is a membrane sweep?

What is a membrane sweep?

See below:: It basically involves doing an exam of the cervix and inserting a finger past the cervix and then bending the tip of the finger under the amniotic sac around the baby. The bent finger is rotated 360 degrees lifting the membranes off the uterus. It cause release of prostaglandins that soften the cervix and can cause some dilation. Membrane sweeping is controversial.
