What's the significance of a fundal height measurement?

What's the significance of a fundal height measurement?

Fundal height is generally defined as the distance from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus measured in centimeters: After the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, your fundal height measurement often matches the number of weeks you've been pregnant. For example, if you're 27 weeks pregnant, your health care provider would expect your fundal height to be about 27 centimeters. It isn't unusual, however, for your fundal height to measure somewhat smaller or larger than expected. This might happen if you: Have a high body mass index, Have a full bladder, Are carrying twins or other multiples. In other cases, fundal height that measures smaller or larger than expected — or increases more or less quickly than expected — could indicate conditions such as: Slow fetal growth (intrauterine growth restriction), Rapid fetal growth, Too little amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios), Too much amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios), Uterine fibroids, A baby prematurely descending into the pelvis or settling into a breech or other unusual position. Depending on the circumstances, your health care provider might recommend an ultrasound or other tests to determine what's causing the unusual measurements. Remember, fundal height is only a tool for gauging fetal growth and gestational age — it's not an exact science. Typically, fundal height measurements offer reassurance of a baby's steady growth. If you're concerned about your fundal height measurements, ask your health care provider for details. ...Read more

What are the limitations of using BMI in assessing a healthy body weight?

What are the limitations of using BMI in assessing a healthy body weight?

Some limitations: Bmi is "body mass index", a calculation that relates height and weight. A bmi under 25 is normal, 25-30 is "overweight", above 30 is "obese". However, bodybuilders with high muscle mass will have bmis above 30, but are not obese. As we age, the bmi may not change much, but the amount of body fat compared to muscle increases. For any given bmi, women will typically have more body fat than men. ...Read more

Is ideal BMI range dependent on person's race for diabetes/heart disease risk reduction? Why?

Is ideal BMI range dependent on person's race for diabetes/heart disease risk reduction? Why?

No: The BMI is simply your weight with respect to your height - an overly simplistic and thereby essentially flawed assessment of your health. It's a bit better when used in combination with body fat measurement. That being said, a high BMI might be associated with diabetes and heart disease amongst other health conditions. ...Read more

Is there an "ideal" waist to height ratio? e.g. 40% of height?

Is there an "ideal" waist to height ratio? e.g. 40% of height?

Not that I know of.: You've probably guessed about right, but there are many standardized height to weight ratios. One common one is the Body Mass Index or the BMI. You can calculate your BMI by taking you weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared. It's not perfect, but in general you want this ratio to be under 25. Hope this helps. ...Read more
