Needing insurance?: We don't want kids to be "disabled" but to find what they can do and build hobbies or eventually a career based on what they CAN do. Parents can ask the county for help. Here in my local area, the county program helps in several ways, and there is even some money for respite care for some families (so caretakers can take breaks). Not uncommon: Sometimes we have to observe a child in different ways. Our neuropsychologist sees patients first & gets the best out of them on standardized tests. Then they see me (db pede) when they're tired, but they've had a snack. With parental permission, i push the buttons that bring out autistic behaviors, if there. I don't know.: Official stats are usually artificial &often misleading. Stats depend on definitions &these criteria are changing all the time. Plus, "learning disability" is a relative term --so many types & levels of severity. My take: 1)a huge # of us struggles w/ learning; 2) schools are overwhelmed by the needs, & rarely meet the need; 3)more funding is only part of the answer; better ed approaches needed. ...Read more
