Dx with cellulities in shin. prescription bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds and keflex. Am elevating leg. Now leg is turning from warm and very bright-reddish to brownish/blackish?

Depends: This truly depends on exactly what it looks like. When cellulitis "burns out" with treatment, there is sometimes a brownish discoloration left behind. However, brown/black always raises the concern of necrosis/gangrene, so if there are worsening symptoms such as pain or swelling, i would immediately go to the er. ...Read more

Will omnicef work on kidney infection? Was switched to omnicef from bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds because of rash and shaking.

Will omnicef work on kidney infection? Was switched to omnicef from bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds because of rash and shaking.

Probably OK, but...: Bad luck with the allergic reactions. Antibiotic effectiveness for any infection depends on the bacteria causing it and which antibiotics are active against it. If you had a positive urine culture that was tested and found susceptible to cefdinir (Omnicef®), it will work well. If such testing wasn't done, you'll have to wait and see how it works. Discuss with the doc who prescribed it. Good luck! ...Read more

Which is the best treatment for hbp: exforge (amlodipine and valsartan) or diltiazem and lisinopril?

Everyone is diffrent: . The key is to get your patient to goal. If you can get the blood pressure to 130/80 or less with either program then it really doesnt matter. In my experience Exforge (amlodipine and valsartan) performs better but you have to taylor the meds to the pt. ...Read more

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) x3da for toe infection; tolerated but still red and swollen.Levaquin proposed but am afraid of side effects.Give bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) more time or change?

The choice of : Antibiotic is based on the organism growing. Culturing a wound helps in identifying the organism. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is not the most common antibiotic for lower extremity infections. Since you mention that one and levoquin it sounds like you are penicillin allergic. If Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is not working, consider doxycycline. Levoquin carries risk of tendon ruptures. ...Read more

Can bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) cause my ankles to swell am taking it for a UTI?

Here are some...: Yes, ankle edema associated with Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) use occurs in 50 yrs. However, to testify if this is in you, you may try on and off Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for a 2-3 week cycle and see if that happens to you since its long-term use may be optional and can be replaced with other antibiotics. So, talk with Doc timely to discuss its significance and how to deal with it. Best ... ...Read more

I'M ON HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE 25 MG FOR SWOLLEN FEET AND ANKLES AND BLOOD PRESSURE FOR DAYS NOW. HOW LONG BEFORE THE SWELLING GOES DOWN?

I'M ON HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE 25 MG FOR SWOLLEN FEET AND ANKLES AND BLOOD PRESSURE FOR DAYS NOW. HOW LONG BEFORE THE SWELLING GOES DOWN?

Peripheral edema: You would know if you are urinating more than usual; then likely this medication/dose is working and you will have to watch along with decreased intake of salt and free water in your diet. If not, may be the medication is not working or you need higher dose. If you have leg swelling from non-water related issues like lymphedema, clot or amlodipine, HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) may not work. Good luck. ...Read more

Which antibiotic is safer for the ears (not ototoxic) Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate Potassium) or Cephalexin. Please advise?

Neither one: None of the 3 components(Amoxicillin, Clavulanate, Cephalexin) of these antibiotics are ototoxic. Also, the potassium in the Clavulanate potassium is not enough to even worry about. It is only there to marry up with Clavulinic acid and make a neutral salt. ...Read more

Is it okay to take antibiotics (Bactrim) while on lisinipril and metoprolol for high blood pressure? Also, which otc meds are best for sinus infection

Mrsa, started taking bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) 48 hours ago, and mupirocin topical. My eye is swelling & have clear/white mucous up from throat. Do i need 2 c dr asap?

Depends: It depends on where your infection was. All you said is that you have mrsa. You didn't say where the infection was and how it originally affected you. If it somehow involves your head and face and you're having eye swelling then absolutely you need to go see your doctor as soon as possible. ...Read more

Medication switching: It is risky business switching medications without the supervision of a physician. It is possible to inadvertantly double up on a group of medications or use another with side effects that overlap. An extreme example of a possible side effect would be complete heart block (normal electrical impulse unable to travel through heart). Uncontrolled blood pressure can be severe too... What other antibiotics are there instead of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) for Renal Infections? Experiencing kidney pain but on Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim).

Renal infections: Hi Annie. There are many antibiotics that are available to treat genito-urinary infections (kidney infections). The antibiotic is generally selected based on the bacteria that may have been seen on the urine culture, the susceptibilities of the antibiotic to the bacteria and how much of the selected antibiotic is effectively delivered to the kidney and urine. ...Read more

Why is there an interaction between Coumadin and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)?

Why is there an interaction between Coumadin and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)?

Increases free drug: Much of Coumadin is bound to protein. Many drugs, including bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) dislodge it from protein and increase the free (active) drug in the circulation. This usually results in a sharp spike in the inr and can lead to bleeding. If you must take batrim, you may need to skip a dose or two of coumadin. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
