How much dimetapp cold and cough should I give my 4yr old? He weighs 35lbs.

Cold medicines: Not a drop! dimetapp and any of otc cold and cough medications do not help relieve symptoms, are useless, money-waster and can cause unwanted bad side effects in your 4yo. The best approach? Give him lots of fluids (water), use saline nasal spray/drops or hot steam inhalation in the bathroom, use humidifier if weather is already cold at night, and give honey to suppress cough especially at night. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Pediatrician advised to give my 21 month old 24 pound daughter 1 TSP dimetapp cold and cough childrens. Is this okay?

Old medication: This is a product sold by prescription 3 decades ago but available over the counter for the last 2. It underwent a formulation change about 10 yrs ago, reducing its strength. At about the same time most realized these products have little value and advised against use under 6. I find this dose a little heavy, by double (when used for allergies). ...Read more

No, but...: If someone needs medicine like that for long periods of time, it is best to get at the root cause and find out what he is allergic to. Then you can eliminate or reduce the exposure to the problem instead of medicating the child. Get a referral to a good allergist from your pediatrician of family doc or even word of mouth and solve the problem. ...Read more

My 5 months old baby girl is having cold and a bad cough does can I give her dimetapp she is about 6.5kg?

Bad selection: These preparations were once used commonly and even prescribed. They contain antihistamines and decongestants.Unfortunately they thicken secretions making it harder for infants to cough out accumulated mucous, and have not real benefit.Their only plus was giving parents something to do. It is best to remove irritants from baby's environment.(Smoke/fragrance)Saline nose wash helps the most. ...Read more

My one year old weighs 22 pounds. Our doctor said to give him dimetapp for his cough. I have the multi symptom cold & flu.

Not recommended: Research has shown that cough and cold medicines offer little benefit to young children and can have serious side effects. Children's Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) can help with pain and discomfort, while a vaporizer or time in the bathroom with the hot shower running can loosen congestion and help with cough. Saline nasal spray can help with a runny nose. ...Read more

My little girl has a bad cough can I give her chidren's dimetapp she is 2 1/2 and shes 28lb ?

Would not recommend : The american academy of pediatrics has stated that children under 3 should not receive cough/cold medications. Multiple studies have shown that they do not help and there have been several deaths reported as a result of giving these medications. An acceptable alternative for relieving cough is honey--either in tea or as honey-based cough medications. Plenty of fluids are also important, . ...Read more

What dosage of children's cold and cough medicine can you give 2 year old?

Consider "none": These used to be given out routinely as prescription meds before they became over the counter. Now we don't recommend them at all under 6 if at all. So many kids ended up in ER's with overdoses that they took a look at the benefit/risk analysis. If you just want to be doing something, it can be done, but studies show no true benefit under 6. ...Read more

What can I give my two year old for a cold and cough?

What can I give my two year old for a cold and cough?

Time and patience: Colds go away in spite of, not because of, all the over-the-counter remedies we use. Some feel better with humidified air, but make sure your humidifier is clean. Decongestants and cough suppressants (used short term) can reduce symptoms of runny nose, but cough meds are better at helping you sleep than at reducing cough. Make sure your little one drinks enough fluids to avoid dehydration. ...Read more

What should I give my 1.3 year old son in the event of cold and cough?

What should I give my 1.3 year old son in the event of cold and cough?

No cough suppressant: Many pediatric studies have shown that cough suppressants do not work in children, and some kids have adverse drug reactions to them. Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen would be fine for any pain relief if they have muscle aches or a headache (both hard to evaluate in a 1.3 year old). If they seem uncomfortable it is ok to try a dose to see if they improve. ...Read more

My child is having cold and cough every days please tell me natural medicine tips?

Depends: It depends on the cause of the cough. Honey ( in a child over 12 months) can help with a cough if it's due to a cold. If it's asthma , pneumonia, allergies or a sinus infection, "natural" medications won't be of much help. I would have him see his pediatrician. ...Read more

Everytime my son catches cold and cough, his cough heals very late. Please suggest an effective cough syrup or medicine?

The safest thing to : Do is see his pediatrician, as your son may have reactive airway disease or mild asthma. Upper respiratory infections can trigger bronchial spasms in people with these conditions, requiring medications called bronchodilators. It's always wise not to suppress coughs in children, except maybe at night for more restful sleep, but only if his doctor okays a medication with dextromethorphan. ...Read more
