Dihydrotestosterone (Overview)

Dihydrotestosterone is the byproduct of testosterone when it is transformed by a process called 5alpha reductase. This is what can cause male pattern baldness and prostate enlargement. This is also why saw palmetto is used for a healthy prostate as it is a 5 Alpha reeductase inhibitor and reduces the reaction.

When does DHT (dihydrotestosterone) cream work for growing beard?

Unknown: First of all, Dht is not available in any topical form in this country - at least not legally - so if someone is offering such a cream, who knows what's actually in it? Second, I would not recommend applying any sort of testosterone-based product directly to the face. This can produce oily skin, acne, and other side effects, with no proven benefits that I know of. ...Read more

Can dihydrotestosterone cause high psa levels?

So, we can say more Dht may cause psa elevation. But, still remember, to a great extent, a healthy body has all bio-feed-back automation to regulate the balance of substances of metabolism. My total testostorone is normal, shbg high (depakote) & free t low. A recent test: dihydrotestosterone-very high why? (psa, prostate, other tests ok)

Okay...?: An isolated high value of a test within the described scenario may not be clinically relevant. In fact, high Dht indicates your bio-active form of testosterone is good, so it's logical not to assert much concern on your daily life. Bottom line is still your energy and ability on how to effectively take on personal and occupational life. If still in doubt, ask doc timely with optional Dht retest. ...Read more

How can you increase DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels?

How can you increase DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels?

Why do u want more?: Testosterone is metabolized (broken down) into Dht & Estradiol (e2). Testosterone is anabolic (makes muscles grow). Dht is androgenic (makes you more male). But too much Dht can also lead to hair loss and prostate enlargement. So we don't typically try to raise Dht (although if you take an aromatase inhibitor to shut down e2, you might raise Dht via seesaw effect), rather we lower Dht via 5ari. ...Read more

Why is my DHT (dihydrotestosterone) level high?

Why is my DHT (dihydrotestosterone) level high?

Lucky, I guess!: Sorry, I'm feeling flippant tonight. Testosterone is metabolized (broken down) into Dht & Estradiol (e2). How much is "wasted" is an individual matter (we don't have much natural control). We can try to affect the ratio of wastage, eg dht:e2, by exercising & losing fat, which might decrease e2 & increase Dht (think of a seesaw). If you're losing hair or have enlarged prostate, 5ari will lower dht. ...Read more

What can dihydrotestosterone supplements do to penis growth?

What can dihydrotestosterone supplements do to penis growth?

Nothing post-puberty: There are supplements that can increase testosterone levels and DHT (Creatine, Forskolin). The penis normally begins growth at ages 9 -13 and completes growth by 19 to 22 yrs. Given your age, unless you have androgen deficiency, it is less likely that DHT will cause more growth of the penis. I can find no credible study that normal adults benefit from DHT for penis length. But my search was brief. ...Read more

Please explain symptoms, possible causes, and problems of a young man converting too much of his testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (dht).?

Too much DHT: The enzyme is 5-alpha reductase that converts "t" to dht. It should be well regulated by the body. Some will genetically have more active enzyme systems. Exogenous testosterone, especially topical, can cause a Dht imbalance because their is more 5 Alpha Redux taste in the skin. Dht is referred to as bad testo. Symptoms of too much Dht include prostate enlargement and male pattern baldness. ...Read more

Is DHT (dihydrotestosterone) related to testosterone level and other hormones?

Yes: Testosterone is broken down into Dht & Estradiol (e2). Too much Dht is associated w/hair loss & prostate enlargement. Too much e2 is associated w/gynecomastia, eg nipple sensitivity and/or male breast development (moobs). Different medications can stop metabolism of t but can also upset balance (think of a seesaw). So if Dht goes down, e2 might go up. And vice versa. Talk to doc & monitor levels. ...Read more

How does testosterone or dihydrotestosterone play a part in hair growth or loss?

How does testosterone or dihydrotestosterone play a part in hair growth or loss?

Hair loss: Two types of androgens are involved in the mechanism of male pattern hair loss. These are testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (dht). Dihydrotestosterone is a derivative of testosterone. The enzyme called 5-alpha reductase converts the relatively inactive testosterone to a more potent form, dihydrotestosterone. Thus, the key enzyme involved in androgenetic hair loss is 5-alpha reductase. ...Read more
