3 months post op. Nissen/laprascopic, robotic, hiatal hernia repair. Recently experiencing painful, debilitating gas& diarrhea. Is this normal?

Not from the surgery: It is very unlikely that these current symptoms are related to your surgery. By far the most common cause of diarrhea is viral infection (enteritis, or gastroenteritis if it involves nausea/vomiting). With any diarrhea, weight loss, dehydration (feeling like you're going to pass out when standing), or fever lasting > 1 day would be cause for concern. Otherwise these things tend to resolve. ...Read more

Bowel movements: We all have a reflex called the gastrocolic reflex that causes us to defecate after a meal, especially a large meal. How come digestive enzymes are reduced after gastric bypass surgery?

Loss of physiology: Food normally is mixed with acid and mechanically broken down in the upper stomach. Small amounts are released through the antrum of the stomach, which goes through the duodenum and proximal jejunum. Various substances stimulate secretion of gut hormones and enzymes. In gastric bypass operations, the antrum, duodenum and proximal jejunum are bypassed and reduce levels of these hormones. ...Read more

Foul smelling gas, lower abdominal pain and cramps during bowel movement, bloating, rectal bleeding. Approx 3 months with symptoms. 27 yr old female?

Please get help...: Gi bleeding is never normal, but when prolonged for months associated with lower abdominal distress as you describe, then colitis (colon inflammation) must be ruled out.
