Diffuse Heterogeneous Thyroid
Thyroid us: diffusely heterogeneous thyroid w/o well-defined dominant nodule, isthmus enlarged. Thyroid ab tests are neg, tg = 88.7 (<55). Diagnosis?
I got thyroid results today and it was "
Diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland without discrete dominant nodules." what does that mean?
Heterogeneity: Heterogeneous means the size is irregular in terms of thickness throughout. Homogenous is the opposite and would mean the gland is uniform in size. Nodules are important to find because they can be functional or "hot" nodules that secrete too much thyroid hormone. May be thyroiditis. See endo for follow up. ...Read more
Heterogeneous thyroid, my ultrasound stated that diffusely heterogeneous thyroid with no discrete cystic or solid nodule identified.
May be autoimmune: Heterogeneous thyroid on ultrasound refers to a thyroid that looks mottled with both dark and light areas throughout. This is a typical finding in people with autoimmune thyroid disease such as hashimoto's thyroiditis or grave's disease. It sounds like there is nothing suspicious that would require biopsy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland with multiple bilateral hypo echoic micro nodules. Increased vascularity.
What does this ultra sound result mea?
Thyroidologist: A thyroidologist or endocrinologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you about your thyroid status and ultrasound findings and to determine whether a needle biopsy and/or referral to a thyroid surgeon is advisable. As a rule multiple nodules are more apt to be benign as opposed to a single cold nodule in males. Follow-up in these cases are also important even after the first consultation. ...Read more
I was diagnosed with a diffusely heterogeneous thyroid on an ultrasound. Scared it will be fatal. Had a PVC 3 weeks ago. Will this kill me? I'm 27.
Not fatal: as this simply describes what the thyroid tissue looked like on ultrasound. You did not state if a "mass" was seen or a cyst. This should be compared to any lab tests that were performed. If those tests are normal then don't lose any sleep about this tissue texture. Talk to your doctor about all the results ...Read more
What is diffusely heterogeneous thyroid gland mean? Also have a 5x5 mm calcified nodule in upper left thyroid lobe. Help me understand this? Thx.
Nodule: Heterogeneous gland means you don't have a smooth gland. This typical happens in pts with autoimmune thyroid disease where the gland is attacked by antibodies. Thyroid nodules are common and mostly benign. You have 1 nodule and it's very small. You can just watch it for now. See your doctor for more personalized explanation. ...Read more
Graves/Thyroiditis: Most commonly this is due to graves disease or thyroiditis. In both of these cases your immune system attacks your thyroid and tries to kill it, because it thinks it is foreign, like a virus. However in graves disease the antibodies that attack the thyroid actually stimulate receptors that make it grow and produce too much thyroid hormone. In thyroiditis the immune cells infiltrate the thyroid. ...Read more

US of thyroid diffusely heterogeneous with multiple sub-centimeter nodules, 6mm isthmus, index nodules mixed echo-texture, what does this mean?
I have a 6mm mass in my left thyroid love and it's considered diffuse heterogeneous. What does this mean?
Nonspecific: A 6 mm thyroid nodule is small. We usually do not worry about nodules under 10 mm. A diffusely heterogeneous thyroid is commonly seen in patients with hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is an autoimmune disorder that can result in an underactive thyroid. You list being on immunosuppressive therapy. If you have one autoimmune disorder, you are at higher risk for another. ...Read more
Bilateral thyroid lobes are enlarged and show diffuse heterogeneous echotexture with increased vascularity. What does that mean?
Thyroid: What have your doctors said about this. There are many options that include surgery or doing nothing. You can rely on your doctors for your management. If your thyroid levels are OK and your thyroid gland is not very enlarged it would be OK to have nothing done aside from regular examination. ...Read more
