My 10 months child has diahrea, she feeding formula Lactogen 2, I don't know whether I hav to change the formula or what I must do, please help?

Recent change?: If you have RECENTLY changed to Lactogen and the diarrhea started, then the diarrhea may be caused by the new formula. However, if you have ALWAYS fed the Lactogen, and the diarrhea has only recently started, look for another cause. Offering an electrolyte solution such as Pedialyte after each loose stool can help prevent dehydration. Bloody diarrhea is always cause for concern, needing doctor. ...Read more

Color normal: Stool color is made by the bile from your liver. The color range goes from dark green through the yellows and browns based on how the bile is changed in transit. The color you describe is well within the range of normal. The increased frequency of stooling may reflect some difficulty digesting his feed. ...Read more

Could you slowly introduce similac isomil (soy formula) from similac alimentum?

How will primarily having your 19 month old on Isomil no 3 formula and every 2nd weekend on normal milk affect your child?

Hard to predict: If the kid has no food allergies these are equally effective in providing water value & nutrients to toddlers. I don't see any particular value in one over the other. Why a kid is still on a formula after a year of age is not clear. I consider such usage just the success of formula makers advertising. ...Read more

My baby is 12 month the doktor tell me take soy-based formul isomil milk is isomill use for along time bad or not?

IT DEPENDS ON REASON: If this was recommended due to a dairy allergy, you need not stay with a soy formula...You could use a brand like SILK.
Long term use is still recommended.
If it is not due to a dairy protein allergy, have it tested and then make a decision ...Read more

Can you use isomil milk formula in infants with msud (maple syrup urine disease)?

Probably not: This disease is because of a defect in metabolism of leucine, isoleucine and valine, all present in protein. I believe that mead johnosn may be making a diet for this disease but it is a long time since I had the care of a msud patient----- a very difficult disease to treat and only diet can prevent the mental retardation that is otherwise inevitable. ...Read more

My daughter (13 months) intolerant to cow milk, using Isomil, now also discovered she is intolerant to Isomil (I did elimination test) what do now? She gets terrible cramps now if she drinks the soya, it started a 4 weeks ago. Are there an option.

My daughter (13 months) intolerant to cow milk, using Isomil, now also discovered she is intolerant to Isomil (I did elimination test) what do now? She gets terrible cramps now if she drinks the soya, it started a 4 weeks ago. Are there an option.

It happens: Between 30-50% of those allergic to cow milk are also allergic to soy. At 13 months you need to decide whether to get off milks, and just make sure she has a calcium source like goat cheese, or calcium carbonate wafers (Tums). You could use what is called an elemental formula like ALUMENTUM but it is expensive and unnecessary at that age. ...Read more

Are there probiotics or prebiotics in baby formula?

No...: If by probiotics you mean active bacterial cultures added to help aid digestion, then no, baby formula does not specifically contain these cultures. A newborn baby's gut becomes populated with "healthy" bacteria from its immediate environment: the birth canal, breast milk, parents' skin, its own hands & mouth, etc; and these bacteria are adjusted as the baby's diet & environment change over time. ...Read more

When do you recommend adding rice cereal to baby formula?

Never: Formula is balanced nutrition & adding cereals to the bottle does not make kids grow better or sleep better. About 6 mo the kid is able to sit up & participate in a feeding, & cereals can be a good first food to teach baby how to manipulate solids with their tongue. This prepares baby for table foods. Early infant feeds were common in the 50's & 60's when moms made their own formula. It is outdated. ...Read more

For baby formula is it better to use baby water w or wo fluoride?

For baby formula is it better to use baby water w or wo fluoride?

Fluoride: One of the best ways to strengthen teeth & make them less susceptible to tooth decay is the incorporation of Fluoride into the actual structure of the enamel as they form. This is much better than any Fluoride treatment to the surface of teeth later on. Whether or not to use Fluoride supplements, vitamins with Fluoride or nothing depends upon the amount of Fluoride in the natural water supply.->. ...Read more

What are some statistics on the benefits of breastfeeding over using baby formula?

What are some statistics on the benefits of breastfeeding over using baby formula?

Good question: Breastfeeding is still considered "best" in most situations but you must choose what you feel comfortable with. There are several factors to consider and the last thing I tell my patient's moms is to do what is comfortable for their situation. I strongly encourage breastfeeding but support whatever choice a mother makes.

My baby just turned 1. Which is better 4 her, stick to baby formula or switch her 2 cow's milk? Which one is healthier? Thank you ☺

Depends: By the time a kid turns one, most have incorporated a variety of semisolid foods. These can easily make up for some of the special features of breast milk or formula. Regular milk, rather than low fat/skim is needed because baby uses the added fat to support brain growth which slows after 2. The extra in formula if not used end up in her pee. ...Read more

What kind of water is best for preparing baby formula? Reverse osmosis from the store? Tap water? Boiled tap water? Nursery water?

What kind of water is best for preparing baby formula? Reverse osmosis from the store? Tap water? Boiled tap water? Nursery water?

Water for formula: Excellent question. You want safe water supply that's appropriately fluoridated so your baby doesn't end up with rotten teeth. MOST community water sources are safe, are closely regulated for what can and can't be in water. We're all scared after Flint MI, but most city water sources are perfect. DON'T boil water. It concentrates trace metals present in the water. Nursery water OK but expensive ...Read more

My 14week old is having 5oz every 3 hours 24/7 of hungry baby formula. Is it possible she's ready for something more like organic baby smoothies?

My opinion no: Your baby is only possibly 20 week old and is now ready for solid food in my practice I usually start with cereals but your md may have a different procedure smoothies are a mixture of too many things to be given at once the idea is introduce foods slowly to make sure the baby has no reaction from them if s/he is hungry still you may add cereal to the bottle and that will fill baby. ...Read more

I realized the gallon of purified water I left out to be room temp to mix with baby formula is cool! Is it okay for formula to be cool at room temp?

No worries: The water can be at any normal temperature for mixing, from cold to warm... but when getting ready to feed a baby, make sure the formula is not too cold, and definitely not hot (hot formula is deadly stuff, so if warming up formula, just make it the same temperature as fresh breast milk). ...Read more

3mo baby formula fed 24 oz/ day. Pediatrician indicated no vit D is needed and will reasses @4mo. I'm scared of rickets. Can it be reversed early on?

New recommendation: The American Academy of Pediatrics states that "Exclusively and partially breastfed babies should receive 400 IU (units) of vitamin D each day starting in the first few days of life and continuing up until babies are weaned to at least 1 liter or 1 quart of vitamin D fortified formula or milk a day." How do I pick a baby formula?

Keep it simple: First, seriously consider nursing. If not possible, and your baby has no allergies or problems, use a milk based formula. If baby has health problems ask your doc for help. There are lots of gimmicks from formula companies right now touting their formula as best. In reality, formula is very closely regulated by the fda and not much difference between the brands unless your infant has special needs. ...Read more
