Possibly: Sertraline and citalopram are in the same class of medications and have the same potential side effects. However, some people tolerate one much better than another. So, you may tolerate Sertraline better. It is important to stay in contact with your provider and let them know of any side effects that you experience, particularly if you have any hypomania or worsening depression. ...Read more

After 10yrs on citalopram my doc is starting me on sertraline. Is this stronger? I'm worried about withdrawals from the citalopram.

After 10yrs on citalopram my doc is starting me on sertraline. Is this stronger? I'm worried about withdrawals from the citalopram.

Similar meds: Citalopram and sertraline are both medicines in the anti-depressant class known as ssris (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). They are similar but not identical. Perhaps the citalopram is not working as well as desired precipitating the switch. If you start the sertraline while coming off of the citalopram, there should not be withdrawal. There is little withdrawal with citalopram anyway. ...Read more

I'm taking 200mg of sertraline a day, yet it doesn't help anymore, the same happened when I took citalopram and prozac, (fluoxetine) what others could I try?

I'm taking 200mg of sertraline a day, yet it doesn't help anymore, the same happened when I took citalopram and prozac, (fluoxetine) what others could I try?

Antidepressants: Your psychiatrist could consider augmenting your sertraline with other agents including abilify, (aripiprazole) wellbutrin, l-methyl folate, etc. Could consider changing to Effexor or cymbalta. For sure, psychotherapy needs to be part of your treatment rather than hoping for pharmaceuticals to manage the entire problem. Best wishes. ...Read more

I've tried sertraline, then citalopram, now on mirtazapine and venlafaxine. Will these drugs ever work? Losing hope.

I've tried sertraline, then citalopram, now on mirtazapine and venlafaxine. Will these drugs ever work? Losing hope.

Add CBT therapy: For decades research has shown that optimal therapy outcomes require therapy - it enhances medication and for some is sufficient alone. The need to learn symptom mgmt skills cannot be met w/out it. Don't lose hope - it is also a major part of successful treatment. In fact, w/out confidence it is unusual for any treatment to be a success. So, find a therapist you trust and work at it! Best! ...Read more

I started 100 mg sertraline and 75 mg venlafexine 3 weeks ago, my 40mg dose of citalopram no longer seemed to be working. I've been feeling anxious and agitated and today I had a severe panic attack. Is this average?

Drug interactions: You're taking 3 meds which have duplicate goals and significant drug interactions. You are at risk for serotonin syndrome which may explain your agitation. Call prescribing doctor right away or go to urgent care to be checked for blood pressure and heart rate. You should not be on all 3 meds at the same time. Please get medical supervision to adjust your meds without delay. Be safe and take care. ...Read more

What are the pros and cons of switching from celexa to zoloft (sertraline)?

What are the pros and cons of switching from celexa to zoloft (sertraline)?

Celexa/zoloft: Pros may include some response as antidepressant if Celexa was not working at optimum dose for several weeks, or was not tolerated well, and also some withdrawal symptoms until zoloft (sertraline) kicks in. Cons may include the opposite, with more symptoms of depression, especially since it takes time for the zoloft (sertraline) to work. ...Read more

Celexa causes hard to reach orgasm. Would lowering the dose help and can it become permanent? I'm on 20 mg. It does help me though. Zoloft (sertraline) made me sick

Celexa causes hard to reach orgasm. Would lowering the dose help and can it become permanent? I'm on 20 mg. It does help me though. Zoloft (sertraline) made me sick

Almost immedicately: The side effect is dose related and improves as soon as the blood levels drop which could be the next day. Of course over time if the depression returns your libido could plummet. Lexapro (escitalopram) may have less sexual dysfunction than Celexa. Young men who are anorgasmic on low doses of SSRI, I wonder about Bipolar disorder and would consider Lamictal as alternate rx ...Read more
