How can you tell the difference between sciatica and a blood clot? If there is no back or hip pain, just leg pain above the knee. Ty

Generally you can't: Unless you have a fever or swollen limb which may suggest a clot more than sciatica otherwise not very specific. I would suggest ruling out the clot first and then workup the sciatica issue afterwards.

What is a good way to prevent blood clots? Never had them, besides being overweight I think I have no risks for it. I get anxious when I get sciatica.

What is a good way to prevent blood clots? Never had them, besides being overweight I think I have no risks for it. I get anxious when I get sciatica.

More info!: To develop Blood Clots a patient either has to have had a severe traumatic injury or other risk factors, like obesity, smoking, estrogen or blood protein deficiencies!, daily exercise, weight loss! Quitting cigarettes, and been active are all protective! Any family or genetic deficiencies need to be factored in!, sciatica causes mechanical back pain, not associated w clots! Best

Pain in calf off and on for almost a yr. Dr said in July it was a nerve or sciatica. Still scared of a blood clot but Dr says no. What could it be?

Almost a year?: Wow! What does your neurologist think? Six months ago you were given two potential causes (sciatica vs nerve)? It may be time to see a nerve specialist. Don't you think?

How accurate are us for blood clot? Came back negative. Said I have sciatica, does the cause soreness behind the knee and calf to? Thanks

Accurate: Us dopplers and venous duplex scans are accurate to diagnose vascular issues, including blood clots and dvt's, etc. Assuming you had some sort of other x-ray that diagnosed a sciatic nerve impingement issue, that condition can certainly cause your symptoms as the sciatic nerve innervates those areas. Best wishes.

Had us on leg to rule out blood clots, was told I had sciatica. Does it have to be fully straight down the leg or brief pains in spots? Like by my groin?

Sciatica: Sciatica or inflammation of the sciatic nerve is often caused by a herniatee disc in the low back. The location and radiation of the pain varies by the level and degree of the disc herniation. A physician who specializes in the spine can help relieve your pain.

YES.: Sciatica is a symptom looking for a diagnosis. You need one! The lump on your thigh may or may not be related to your other symptoms. In any case, you need to see a doctor. Please do so at your earliest convenience.

I have pain in my lower leg, moves around from shin to calf to ankle for 3 days now. Worried about a blood clot but also have had sciatica. What to do?

See your Doctor: Once blood clot is ruled out, then if you know you have sciatica it probably is that. Make sure though you rule out the blood clot first. You may need to see a spine/pain specialist for further evals and treatment for the sciatica though.

I'm on the pill, is it bad to skip periods? I get bad sciatica each month when I have a period. Also is getting a blood clot when not menstruating bad

I'm on the pill, is it bad to skip periods? I get bad sciatica each month when I have a period. Also is getting a blood clot when not menstruating bad

No: No harm has been associated with using medication to suppress periods for up to one year. That being said, most women find that to be a strange concept, so these forms of birth control are often formulated to permit menstruation once every 3 to 6 months. Getting a clot in a vein or artery is always bad, but period clots if that's what you mean are normal and very common.

Leg feels heavy, muscle spasms, hurts from toes to buttocks, possible bursitis in knee, Can sciatica cause all this or could it be a blood clot?

Leg feels heavy, muscle spasms, hurts from toes to buttocks, possible bursitis in knee, Can sciatica cause all this or could it be a blood clot?

Not likely: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor. If you are overweight it is imperative that you lose weight through diet and exercise.

Check for fibroids: You might have fibroids that can cause abnormal bleeding. An ultrasound can confirm whether this might be a problem. If your doctor can see that your uterus is enlarged that would suggest a fibroid. You could also have polyps in your endometrial cavity that might cause bleeding. Make an appointment to see your doctor.

I think I'm pregnant but test show no hcg but I have all the symptoms and now I have cramping low back pain and only blood clot coming out here and th?

Not pregnant: If there is no HCG there is no pregnancy. There are lots of causes of cramping and low back pain and blood clots coming out every now and then is not a symptom of pregnancy. See your doctor for a full history, exam, and appropriate testing to find out what the problem is so that you can fix it. Hope this helps.
