What does a post appendectomy abscess feel like?

What does a post appendectomy abscess feel like?

RLQ pain: When an abscess forms after an appendectomy it usually causes continued pain in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. The pain can be in the midline or even a bit to the left depending on the abscess location. There is usually tenderness to palpation, fever and an elevated WBC count. A ct scan of the abdomen and pelvis is the best diagnostic test.

Removal Of Appendix (Definition)

An appendectomy is surgery to remove the appendix. The appendix is a small, finger-shaped organ extending from the first part of the large intestine. It is removed when it becomes inflamed or infected. A perforated appendix can leak and infect the entire abdominal area, which can be life-threatening. An appendectomy is done under general anesthesia, which means you are asleep and do not feel any pain during the surgery. The surgeon makes a small cut in the lower right side of your belly area ...Read more

In a post appendectomy or exlap patient, when should the wound be cleaned and dressing changed? How often?

In a post appendectomy or exlap patient, when should the wound be cleaned and dressing changed? How often?

Daily but steri stay: Most patients are discharged with a dressing that can be removed. Daily dressing changes allow the incision to be inspected. If you had exploratory laparotomy you may have steri strips or staples. They stay until you see your surgeon. The instructions should be on discharge summary. Including shower instructions. Your surgeon will review findings and look at wound in follow up.

Abscess pain post appendectomy laparoscopy, what to do?

Abscess pain post appendectomy laparoscopy, what to do?

See your surgeon!: If you have an abscess, it must be drained. If it has been drained, and you are having pain from the drain, that will improve as the abscess resolves. I am assuming if you know you have an abscess, someone is treating it. Abscesses (an infected fluid collection) are painful, but that usually improves with drainage and antibiotics.

I have post appendectomy fluid in abdomen, it got inflamed after antibiotics treatment, everything was fine, I'm experiencing mild symptoms again advic?

Could be abscess: It is unusual to develop fluid after a straightforward appendectomy but it can happen. The fluid should be drained with a needle under ct or ultrasound guidance to make sure it is all removed.

If you cannot: Hold anything down, you get dehydrated. A lot of complciations can cause this. But if someone cannot keep liquids down, there's not much choice except to get immediate treatment.

Post appendectomy tightness in left knee cap, pain when I move it. I spent most of the day after surgery walking around, then all of a sudden this began. On Levaquin, (levofloxacin) but have only had 1 dose.

Side effect: Levaquin (levofloxacin) can cause tendonitis, but only one dose is unlikely to be reason, but not impossible. Another thought would be that you favored the left leg while walking around post surgery and it is slightly inflamed? If it continues, ask your MD about switching antibiotics.

Distended stomach pain watery diarrhea fever 3 weeks post appendectomy?

Distended stomach pain watery diarrhea fever 3 weeks post appendectomy?

C. Diff: Have to be concerned about an infection in the colon caused by a bacterium called clostridium difficila. Most often occurs after given an antibiotic for some other reason (appendicitis). Anitibiotics can kill off "good" bacteria in colon leading to over growth of bad bugs- c. Diff. Need to have stool checked and if present treated with oral antibiotics. Good also be an abscess in pelvis.

After a laparscopic appendectomy what are if any limitations in diets, activity, and health care. Such as cleaning wounds and dressing them?

After a laparscopic appendectomy what are if any limitations in diets, activity, and health care. Such as cleaning wounds and dressing them?

Ok to ask surgeon: Your surgeon and facility typically give verbal and written instructions on what to expect after surgery. Ok to call and ask, make your post op appointment at the same time. Typically diet limited until bowels are moving, and avoiding heavy lifting for two weeks is the answer.

Post Op Complication: You are having a post operative complication. It is inappropriate to be seeking care for the complication from any physician other than the surgeon. Surgeon's must be informed of complications so that they can correct the problem before complications worsen. Please contact your surgeon. You were given written and verbal instructions to take home after surgery on how to do this.

Had an appendectomy, but am currently experiencing the same symptoms as during my appendicitis. Not sure what to do.

See your surgeon....: Was your surgery recent? Pains or illness after surgery, especially after what was likely an emergency surgery for you, needs to be addressed by your surgeon. Contact your surgeon to ask questions & make an appointment for evaluation. However, if the surgery was more than several months ago, then see your primary doctor or go to an er to be evaluated.
