Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Ischemic colitis improved w/ Pepto & low fiber diet Returned to normal routine and symptoms returned Pain, rectal bleeding etc. What is happening?
Causes of colitis: Inflammation (infection, ischemic, ibd) of large intestine = colitis. Specifically, ischemic colitis occurs when there is decreased blood flow to the gut, due either to vasospasm (seldom recurrent) or stenosis/occlusion (frequently recurrent). Don't ignore the possibility of recurrence here--since transmural ischemia or mesenteric ischemia can be very serious. Get to the hospital now for recheck. ...Read more
Are anusol suppositories helpful for bleeding during and/or after a bowel movement? Not just spots, good amount of blood
Anusol may help: It sounds like you are dealing with hemorrhoids or possibly a rectal fissure. The former is something like a varicose vein that bulges in the rectum; the latter is a crack in the lining of the rectum. Anusol suppositories used regularly (2-4 times a day) will soothe the area and might promote faster healing. If the blood persists, see your doctor. ...Read more
Early vs. Late: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on. After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence. ...Read more

24 yr old bright red rectal bleeding for a few weeks almost 3 years ago.No bleeding or symptoms since. Dr said ok.Would colon cancer continue to bleed?
Can pruritis ani contribute to getting anal fissures? Had surgery, eat a high fiber diet, take softeners and still get reoccurring fissures. What now?
No actual diet: I recommend my patients, who are dealing with ulcers, try to keep some food in their stomach, even a snack before going to bed. There's no foods that have to be avoided, except those that are personally irritating. So, super spicy foods or snacks should probably be left alone. and, avoid tobacco and alcohol while healing. Just graze all day, and take your medications as directed. Good luck. ...Read more
Have another? that's with this. Blood in stool, minuscule 3 days now. Not hemorrhoid or anal fissure. Could be just an ulcer bleed? Weight loss w/this
Small fresh blood, rectal pain and itching after bm..Had anal fissure 2 years ago...Is this hemmorroids?
Could be: Fissures are usually associated with pain during and after a bm. Your symptoms could very well be secondary to hemorrhoids. You would need an anorectal exam to identify the source and differentiate the 2. I would rcommend getting an exam by your primary md or a gi/colorectal surgeon if you have seen any in the past. ...Read more
Bleeding in rectal, exam shows blood in stool & hemorrhoids, have loose stool, rare for solids. Can I use miralax (polyethylene glycol) safely to help loosen impacted stool?
Yes you can: Use a dose (17 gm packets) daily, but also recommend you start taking supplemental fiber (like metamucil or equivalent) along with. This will help you be more regular naturally. Once you feel you have "cleaned out" somewhat - stop the MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) but continue the fiber on a daily basis. Also try warm soaks on your hemorrhoids, and topical creams with steroid (hc) may help, too. ...Read more
No: People do not die from an anal fissure. Constipation can be treated with more fruits and vegetables in the diet. There are over the counter fiber supplements as well. In order for the fiber to be effective, you need to have a good intake of fluids as well, at least 50-60 ounces of fluid a day. ...Read more
