What could I do to break/sprain your ankle at home?

What could I do to break/sprain your ankle at home?

Try: Jumping out the window. That always works for me.

To be serious, dr. Sung's advice to be careful on stairs is very important, but sometimes a simple mis-step is enough to twist/sprain/break your ankle. Only an x-ray can determine if you have a break though. Ice, rest, elevation, and if you're not much better in 24 hours, go see a podiatrist or orthopedist. ...Read more

What to do if I sprained my ankle, and I'm trying to tough it out. Can it turn into a break if not treated?

What to do if I sprained my ankle, and I'm trying to tough it out. Can it turn into a break if not treated?

You may have one...: Ankle sprains can sometimes result in fractures in the foot, particularly along the 5th metatarsal (and just because you can walk on it, doesn't mean it didn't break). Have it checked out properly by a foot/ankle specialist. If not, you risk having an undetected injury and it could compromise not only your healing but can affect other components of your gait and overall activity level. ...Read more

Which is worse: an ankle sprain or break?

Which is worse: an ankle sprain or break?

It depends...: Some sprains are severe, involve multiple ligaments and create joint instability, possibly requiring surgery. Some are very mild and only involve rest. The same variability occurs with fractures. Some fractures are unstable and require hardware fixation. Some fractures only require brief immobilization. The key is an accurate diagnosis, very specific treatment advice and often rehabilitation. ...Read more

How can I tell if I have an ankle sprain or break?

X-rays are standard: To determine if there is a fracture. While some fracture lines can be hard to detect, most times if the x-ray taken after an injury is clear, it will be considered a sprain of the ligaments--especially if the ligaments are painful to the touch. ...Read more

I recently sprained my ankle it's been 6weeks and It's still swollen and I'm in pain and it cracks got a x Ray no break any suggestions?

Severe strain: Stretched or torn ankle ligaments can take longer to heal than bones. The cracking sounds may never go away but the rest should heal in 2-3 months depending on how badly you injured them. Walking helps it heal better but you may need physical therapy to help with instability and strength. ...Read more

8wks ago I sprained my ankle no break I'm still in pain doc said just rest and today I think I re-injured it by twisting it any sugg?

Ankle sprain: You should stabilize the ankle with a brace or an elastic bandage at the least. Applying ice initially to reduce the swelling and heat after about 2 days to improve blood flow should help. Make sure it is not broken when you injured it second time. Ligaments take weeks to months to heal. Good luck. ...Read more

In PT for sprained ankle. Reinjured first day back at cheer. If PT doesn't help, what's next? No MRI yet, X-ray showed no break. Injured 5+ months

MRI: If physical therapy does not help with this injury, then an MRI would be the next step. An x-ray can only provide information on the integrity of bones. An MRI will provide additional detail on whether there are any torn ligaments or other supporting soft tissues. Most important thing is to follow up with your doctor if physical therapy is not helping. ...Read more

Would a plaster cast be needed for my ankle sprain? It's been 6 weeks it's swollen in pain but my initial X-ray show no breaks

Unlikely: A plaster or fiberglass cast is commonly used for broken ankles. Although you may not have a broken ankle, you may have tearing of the ligaments or tendons in your ankle. If you are still having pain and and an unstable feeling in the ankle 6 weeks after your injury, you should be evaluated by a physician. It is possible you would benefit from exercise therapy or visiting a physical therapist. ...Read more

Yesterday afternoon I missed a step and fell. I twisted my ankle and heard a pop. I did the rice treatment all evening. Sprain vs break?

X-ray: Rice treatment was excellent. Hearing 'pops' and having signifigant ankle pain, swelling, bruising are all consistent with ankle sprains and ankle fractures. Some people are even able to bear weight on a broken ankle. Good quality x-says will differentiate between the two.! see your pcp or orthopedic surgeon. Best of luck! ...Read more

Ankle sprain for 6 weeks now and it's still swollen and I'm still in pain. And when I sprained it I heard a crack got a X-ray no break there any sugg?

See your doctor: Hi Peter, Sorry your ankle is hurting. The one thing I'd like to share is that an initial xray is not foolproof. You can have a break that isn't visible at first. Ongoing pain could be that your ankle needs more rest, but most physicians would recommend repeat imaging to be on the safe side. It may be a tendon rather than a bone that is injured. Good luck, hope it's better soon. ...Read more
