Yes, withdrawal: Taking this amount of diazepam for the past 4 years is enough to cause withdrawal symptoms. Please don't try to taper this on your own, but get your doctor's help. Especially, you want to be sure that the problems for which diazepam was originally prescribed, are in remission. If not, they will make tapering very difficult to impossible. Be well. ...Read more

1979!: Warning you against long-term use is pointless. But it is NOT recommended. Discuss w/ Dr for why. Your immediate w/drawal reaction might be nocebo - fear reaction. In any case, consider adding CBT therapy to optimize benefits. Do not increase dose or freq! See below.: Less important than the dose is the half life. Valium does have a longer one to give a sustained effect and minimize intoxication/withdrawal However, even without drug cravings or aberrent use- one would still expect some tolerance and excessive rebound of symptoms upon discontinuation.
