I have diastasis recti and I suspect it is the cause of my back pain. How can I determine that it is definitely the cause of my pain?
After being diagnosed with diastasis recti I have noticed the bulging above my belly getting worse when I lay on back and lift legs. What is going on?

That sounds normal -: To me. The mesh and scar tissue both would cause hardness/tightening of the abdo wall. In my opinion that was the aim of the procedure, to prevent the diastasis from recurring. ...Read more

I'm 18 and possibly got a diastasis recti, can it be fixed with out surgery? And what is a cause? And can I still gym with it?
Fixed???: Diastasis Recti is just a descriptive term that can be applied to the configuration of your ab muscles. If they set further apart than "normal"they have diastasis- or a setting apart. If your abdominal wall is firm and there is no abdominal contents trying to push out (hernia) it is fine to leave it alone. No/Unlikely: Normally, the paired rectus abdominus ("6-pack") muscles are fused together in the midline. Separation of these muscles, diastasis, is common w/premature infants & following increased abdominal girth (pregnancy, obesity). Depends on kind of:
Exercises that you do. Repeated crunches and heavy lifting are likely to increase the diastasis, but core training like push ups and planks and overall cardio conditioning should be helpful. Many women get diastasis after pregnancy, and this site may be helpful:

I managed to rectify diastasis recti with exercise after my 1st 2 pregnancies but 1 year on after my 3rd I still look 3mths pregnant. What can I do?

In my practice, I see this most commonly in women after childbirth or in barrel-chested men who have gained weight. I had a rather large hernia repair with mesh years ago and since then have developed a diastasis recti, will this cause me any problems?
Fix the hernia only: Diastasis recti is a thinning of the midline fascia between the "six pack" muscles, which results in a bulge developing in the upper abdomen with contraction of the abdomen. It is not a hernia, is not pathological, and, in my opinion, does not need to be "fixed." unfortunately, you can't exercise this away. Just maintain a healthy weight. Can a general surgeon correct diastasis recti? Do you think he will also repair a small hernia I have even though it's not bothersome?
Possibly: A diastasis, or weakening of the muscle wall midline fascia, is not typically covered by insurance secondary to it being more of a cosmetic issue. A hernia on the other hand can be observed if small and reducible (easily pushed in). Diastasis recti is most commonly corrected in combination with a tummy tuck. I see conflicting ideas -diastasis recti can be helped thru exercise/PT, or others say it cannot. If it's a muscle separation, why can't it be fixed?
