A stool analysis and culture, and a check for parasites (ameba) may be in order to identify the cause. A short course of antibiotics may also be worth it if you haven't had any yet. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my son ate beef burger and with in 6 hours had six watery diarrhea, then got extreme chills and fever 104.5 f?

Food born illness: This sounds extremely suspicious for a food-born diarrheal illness. Many times these are bacterial, but even so are often self-limiting. I would encourage you to get a stool sample collected for culture, including toxigenic E.coli, and have doctor order to get those incubating. It takes 2-3 days to get results, and by then you'll know if son getting better or worse. If sicker sooner, go to ER. ...Read more

2 of my sons & I within 2 hours of each other we're all puking & diarrhea. Body aches & chills but no fever. I had a bad headache & dizzy. Contagious?

See answer: The fact that all three of u are sick at the same time suggests a contagious condition; or food poisoning - if all three of you had the same food. Vomiting and Diarrhoea being the most important symptoms the main complication can be dehydration which needs to be prevented with oral hydrating solutions and/ or IVs. Usually both these conditions are are self limiting. See doctor if worried/prolonged ...Read more

Toddler has loose stools on and off for 2wks now. This happenes every few months. Acts normal, no fever, etc. Stool is light brown. Should I be worried?

Diarrhea: The stool color isn't worrisome, but if its been intermittent for a few months then needs more thorough evaluation. Besides a food restriction trial, he might need further evaluation through blood and stool. ...Read more

Are very foul smelling loose stools in infants without fever, mucus or blood a sign of Amoebic dysentery?

Are very foul smelling loose stools in infants without fever, mucus or blood a sign of Amoebic dysentery?

Amoeba Shmomoeba...: Think about it this way: Whatever is causing the diarrhea, an infant is very sensitive to fluid loss, and other losses too. So if it has been excessive and persistent and the baby won't take enough fluids by mouth to compensate for the losses (dry mouth, decreased tears and urine volume, acting cranky and tired), it's time to see a doctor. Let him figure out the cause, whether amoeba or just a virus ...Read more
