A bit long: A cough and chesty cold for 10 days is a bit long for a typical viral infection. You don't say whether you have a fever, sweats, chills, are short of breath or feel ill. The absence of those is somewhat reassuring, but not enough to say there is nothing to be concerned about. There should not be: too much sugar in the cough drop to affect your diabetes but if you have a viral illness which necessitates the use of cough drops there could be an affect on your diabetes from the infection. As long as you monitor your sugars closely there should be no danger. ...Read more

Needs to be checked: 58 years old with history of diabetes and smoking with a cold associated with fever needs to be checked by your pyusician as he may have a bacterial infection like acute bronchitis, acute exacerbation of copd, or pneumonia or sinus infection.Meanwhile make sure he drinks plenty of fluid, refrain from smoking and use an over the counter sugar free cough med like Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm, till he consults his doctor. ...Read more

Cough in a smoker: You have type 2 diabetes and on meds, are you on ace inhibiters which are used for high blood pressure in diabetics for renal protection and can cause cough.Smokind iyself can cause chronic cough and chronic bronchitis, but you should see your doctor as its been for 5 months and you want to know the cause and get treated.You should seriously stop smoking. ...Read more

Lots of options: Pna is aggressive and deadly, hence the vaccine. Numerous "flu" / "cold" viruses are prevalent during the fall/winter, and you likely found one of those to get a lower resp tract infxn, like bronchitis. Usually symptom tx works (steam vaporizer--if safe to use by your bed), Mucinex (guaifenesin) to thin secretions, +/- albuterol. See your dr for eval & meds (not likely abx). ...Read more
