Zyrtec (cetirizine): Polaramine (dexchlorpheniramine maleate) (dexchlorpheniramine) is an older antihistamine that is not used as often due to dosing every 8 hours and side effects (impaired driving ability). Effectiveness of polaramine (dexchlorpheniramine maleate) was similar to Claritin (loratadine) while a study in healthy adults showed zyrtec (cetirizine) to be a better antihistamine than polaramine (dexchlorpheniramine maleate). That's an overdose: 32-48 mg is definitely an overdose of chlorpheniramine. The maximum over-the-counter recommended dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours (24 mg max/day). There are extended-release forms that have higher doses, but they are also meant to last 12 hours or longer. 32-48 mg will likely cause dry mouth, eyes, etc., as well as excessive drowsiness. I don't recommend at all that high a dose. ...Read more
