Must be careful:
Yes, it is safe- but keep in mind: This is normally done slowly. Depending on what dose you use, the amount you take is gradually reduced over weeks, to prevent the risk of a withdrawal effect, such as nausea or a seizure.
For example, if you use 500 mg twice a day, a typical reduction would be to 250 mg twice a day for one week, then 250 mg once a day for one week, then stop. ...Read more

My doc told me today that it was okay to stop taking Depakote ER for migraines without a cut back plan. Taking it for a month. 1000 MG a day. Safe?
It may be, but: If you do notice any unpleasant effects you still want him to be responsible toward you. That's a reasonably brief use, but step-down is still done by many doctors. Ask for a 'security blanket' Rx for a step-down if you feel the need. You need not use it if you feel fine. Win-Win! ...Read more
I went to a doctor for trouble sleeping and he put me on Depakote er. Did he lie about what it's for?
Misunderstanding?: Doctors rarely lie. But it does sound like you need to see another doctor. If you don't trust a doctor - even a good one - it's not as helpful. Make sure you understand each other - bring someone along to help if needed. It is not a usual rx for insomnia - it can even cause it. Understanding = help. Achieve it and you're partway there! ...Read more

Can I take ocassional acetaminophen 500-1000 mg if I've hepC, but liver tests are normal and I also take depakote ER 1000 mg/d.?
Most likely: Although you should clear it with your liver doctor, occasional use of acetaminophen does not cause harm to the liver. If used on a regular basis, however, it can be harmful. I take Epilim Chrono 500mg which isn't actually equal Depakote ER. (500mg Epilim = 333mg sodium valproate + 145 mg valproic acid), so when to test?
The idea is this medication is supposed to generate a steady state level after about 3 days. Peak and trough levels matter if you are looking for toxicity or sub-therapeutic levels with medications with a short half life. Also Depakote has a very wide therapeutic level (50-100)
Consider obtaining a Vit D level (which is often low) and checking ammonia after being on this medication a while. ...Read more
Switched from Trileptal to Depakote ER 1000 mg/d ; I've HCV and Depakote itself is hard on liver, which pain killer should I prefer now? APAP or nsaids
Best ask prescriber: NSAIDS and acetaminophen (APAP, paracetamol) can both cause problems for someone with a damaged liver. Because a specific answer to a specific case would depend on detailed knowledge of medical history/labs/studies/biopsies, this question is best asked of the prescriber of the Depakote, or of the physician treating the hepatitis C. ...Read more

Check LFT: You should check with your prescribing doctor regarding the status of your liver. I would periodically check liver function and ammonia anyway but I tend to err on the side of caution. The earliest sign of liver problems is loss of appetite followed by itchiness. I would not take more than 325 mg of APAP every 8 hours. ...Read more

Bipolar Treatment: The research clearly shows that people suffering from bipolar disorder have the best outcomes with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Depakote->racing tht: It soundly like you've been diagnosed with anxiety and take Clonazepam and propranolol. It sounds like these should cover your anxiety. Given that you were only on it one 1 month, it does not seem it was likely the cause of your current racing thoughts.
