Timing: A valproic acid trough level, which is what should be measured, needs to be drawn ten to twelve hours after the last dose. Btw-the therapeutic range for levels is 50-100 for seizures, but it is 75-125 for mood stabilization. Other labs which should be drawn with the level are a CBC (blood count), and ast/alt (liver enzymes). ...Read more

Considerable: Although Depakote and lithium are both prescribed and are effective for the treatment of bipolar d/o, they do differ.Depakote is actually an anticonvulsant medication prescribed for seizures, while lithium is not. Categorically NO: If the valproate is for seizure control, i would definitely not recommend you take orlistat. Valproate is a prescription and should be given for a definite purpose. Orlistat is going to move things throug the bowel faster, inhibit fat absorption and can case mal-absorption of fat soluable vitamins in the diet. You end up pooping oil. If you do this, you should be under strict care of your doc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Valproic acid at low doses causing greater mental adverse side effects, and greater physical side effects at higher dosages?
Dose related: Both mental and physical side effects with valproic acid are usually dose related (higher the higher the dose). However, you might notice that the effectiveness (reduction in mental symptoms) is also dose related. What you are thinking of as adverse mental side effects might be untreated psychiatric symptoms. Part of what makes psychiatry interesting! :-). ...Read more

Absolutely!: I rarely prescribe valproate as an initial anti-epileptic agent anymore (though i did years ago) since there are so many aeds (antiepileptic drugs) that just as well or better without causing so many side-effects. Tremor is one of the chief offenders. Tremor can occur even at "sub-therapeutic" blood levels. ...Read more

Other medications are carbamazapine (tegretol) and the medications in the class called second generation antipsychotics. A common problem with many medications can be weight gain issues. I always try to avoid this with my patients. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Call the doc.: If a medicine combo is not working, let the doc know so it can be adjusted. Consider a second opinion with another psychiatrist if that is not successful. Of course, if your friend/loved one wishes to hurt him/herself or others, or is hearing or seeing things that others don't hear or see, call 911 or take him/her to the ER. Hope your friend feels better soon! ...Read more

No: Can use while breastfeeding. If you are on this medication then you probably have a seizure disorder or bipolar disease. There is a risk of congenital defects but some women need to stay on this type of medication or else their original problem may worsen which would also be detrimental to the baby. You should start taking 1 gram of Folic Acid a day before you get pregnant while on this. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I take Epilim Chrono 500mg which isn't actually equal Depakote ER. (500mg Epilim = 333mg sodium valproate + 145 mg valproic acid),so when to test?
Random: The idea is this medication is supposed to generate a steady state level after about 3 days. Peak and trough levels matter if you are looking for toxicity or sub-therapeutic levels with medications with a short half life. Also Depakote has a very wide therapeutic level (50-100) Consider obtaining a Vit D level (which is often low) and checking ammonia after being on this medication a while. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Yes: This is as safe as eating fish while on these- probably safer, as a good fish oil has been purified of mercury, pcb's etc. Research studies show that adding fish oil to anti-depressants like zoloft (sertraline) often result in additional benefits (though some studies disagree). Fish oil is quite safe. See http://www.Drweil.Com/drw/u/qaa400988/fish-oil-for-depression.Html. ...Read more

Yes: You have not been through all mood-stabilizing possibilities. If you're not working with a psychiatrist to manage these medications, please do so. While on valproic acid (depakene), is it safer to use acetaminophen (tylenol) or ibuprofen (motrin)?
Check With Your MD: One should always check with their physician if they have specific questions regarding their medical care. In general, both Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen are safe to take with valproic acid. Taking more than 4000mg of Acetaminophen is not recommended due to liver toxicity. Patients taking valproic acid should have their liver function evaluated regularly by a simple blood test. ...Read more

My 5 yr son is under treatment with valproic acid due to febrile seizures. Dosage is 440mg/day and he weights 26kg. Is this dose correct?
Reasonable dose: This seems like a reasonable dose. This is on the low end of the scale. However you can go quite a bit higher. Ultimately, you need to weigh the risk of the medicine versus the benefit of preventing seizures. Please be sure you follow up to your doctor. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

My 11yr.Old is on valproic acid for seizure disorder, she is also on i'm amoxacillin. She has a bad cough can I give her cough medicine?
See below: Professionally, I do not recommend cough suppressants except as a last resort for cough that has persisted to the point of not sleeping for multiple nights. Cough is protective and keeps your airways open as well as clearing mucous and other fluid from your lungs. Keeping the cough reflex is important. However, if the trigger of the cough is mucous drainage, using Mucinex (guaifenesin) and a sudafed can help. ...Read more
