Deep Chest Cough No Fever
I'm coughing real blood and I've got chest pain. No fever, but constant cough (big smoker). Will amoxicillin take care of it?
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

If you have bronchitis or pneumonia, then it can be treated. Better safe than sorry. Hope this helps. ...Read more
Should I go to the ER? Mild fever 5 days chest and sinus congestion, deep cough and wheezing. Lightheaded with headache and body aches
Primary Care: Your primary care provider is likely a better choice for non life-threatening illness. ER doctors are trained to work quickly and efficiently in situations where the patient's life is at risk, so you are more likely to be exposed to tests that involve radiation or risk of false-positive results. Of course if you are struggling to breath, the ER is appropriate. ...Read more

Rest, soup/hot drink: It sounds like you have a viral infection-possibly the flu given the many cases we are seeing in the hospitals now. Rest is vitally important. Keeping very well hydrated also is important -chicken soup, hot lemon tea, etc should help. Try over-the-counter cough medicine/Tylenol. If you're feeling worse, see a doc for formal evaluation and treatment, esp. If you develop fever. Hope you feel better ...Read more

9mo has yellow fluid in ear, no fever, runny nose, 2 new teeth that cut through recently & a junky chest cough. Happy & alert but refuses solids.
Possibly pneumonia: I have found that when people have a deep cough associated with pain on taking a deep breath they often times have pneumonia. You should be evaluated by a physician. If this has been a long-term problem then you definitely need to be evaluated as there are other causes. ...Read more
Not necessarily: It's a good sign your daughter has no fever. If it looks like a cold with a just a runny nose and deep cough, it's okay to wait 3-4 days and see how she does before seeing your doctor. Cough can be caused by lots of things and not just infection. Acid reflux can do it. So can an aspirated object (if your daughter's a toddler). Good luck! ...Read more

Post-tussive cough.: When we're sick with an upper or lower respiratory infection, the cough tends to be the last symptom to clear. This is called a post-tussive cough which, as you can surmise, means "post-cough cough". The coughing itself makes the cough linger. The solution? Cough suppressant. ...Read more

Hv a very bad deep cough during wint. Mos esp. Every yr. My ribs and chest hurt. Hard to sleep. In physical dr never says anything is wrong. Am I ok?
Cold weather + lungs: Cold weather may irritate your lungs, specifically the upper airways called bronchi. It is a variant of asthma. In some people, as cold air rushes in on taking a breath, the irritation causes the bronchi to constrict, resulting in cough and even wheezing. Physical exam (done at room temperature and at rest) is often normal. These reactive airways may improve with a trial of bronchodilators. ...Read more

Cough/fever: He may have a viral illness that is not going to respond to antibiotics. It is also possible the antibiotics hosen are not the right ones for his illness. If he has been on the antibiotics originally given for more than 2-3 days and is not getting any better, I suggest he go back to the doctor to make sure this has not progressed to pneumonia. ...Read more
Have a cold 3 times in 3 mos, nonstop. Start w/swol tonsils, then deep chest cough. As soon as it gets better starts again. Go to the dr or wait? .
I've had a deep cough since march. Why won't it go away? Zpack & antibiotic tried. My fever went away already however this cough has not.
Not unusual: The fever and infection appear to clear up, but the cough sounds like it is hanging around, which is very common after both viral and bacterial infections that involve the airways and lungs. I tell people to think of what they've been through as if you burned yourself. The skin heals, infection clears or is avoided, but the area of skin is still sensitive for weeks. Same happens in lungs/airways. ...Read more

Atypical pneumonia: Atypical pneumonia is an infection in the lungs caused my unusual bacteria like mycoplasma or legionella and where the symptoms differ from the classic ones. Therefore, it's often harder to diagnose. The antibiotics used are different and if it becomes severe it may require hospitalization. If you're not getting better, ask your physician what he /she thinks and if a chest x-ray is warranted. ...Read more
I've been sick with a cold and after day 5 I have a deep cough, I'm extremely lightheaded and I have difficulty breathing along with chest pains.?
Chest cold: Your upper respiratory infection has spread to your breathing passages and now you have acute bronchitis. There may be a component of asthma as well, even if you've never had asthma before. If you're uncomfortably short of breath, you should go immediately to an ER for prompt treatment. If it's just a nuisance symptom, you ought to at least see your doctor tomorrow to be examined. ...Read more
My husband has had cold chills, a high fever, shaking and numbness all over with a deep cough. Is there something he can take? He has had broccidis many times before
High fever and chills are worrisome for a serious infection (bacterial or viral). He could have bronchitis again or even pneumonia or the flu. The only way to be sure is to seek out medical care. It is possible that he may need antibiotics if he has a bacterial infection.
By the date of this post almost a week has passed, hopefully he has improved or has seen a doctor by now. If not, he should go right away.
Take care. ...Read more

You need a medical evaluation as soon as possible to treat possible lung infection. If you smoke - stop. Bloated stomach may be entirely different. ...Read more
My 3 year old has a 103 temp and deep cough, labored breathing. Do I take her to the ER ore treat the fever and wait to see my pediatrician?
Comfort measures: The average 3yo will have 5 respiratory & 2-3 diarrheal illnesses/yr. Many will have fever/most will self heal. Fever is not the enemy it is a signal that a kids system is trying to make the body too hot for germs to reproduce. It also increases blood flow & allows the immune system to kick in faster. If the kid is hydrated enough to pee every 6 hrs he can wait overnight & be reassessed in the am. ...Read more
