I cannot take a deep breath without clearing my throat. Is this normal?

Not normal: Your history suggest that you had barium swallow study done in the past, so this seems to have been an ongoing problem. With yours postnasal drip history, it's not normal to have to clear your throat in order to breathe deeply, unless you have thick sputum, or excessive nasal drainage. If that's the case, you need to be worked up further by your doctor or referred to a neurology specialist who can help you. Read more

4yr son clears throat and takes deep breaths. Says he's not having hard time breathing. Should I b worried? What should I do?

Consider an ENT: There may be more here than allergies. Being unable to clear the throat may be a result of something that is not an allergic process, such as, chronic gastroesophageal reflux, as well as several other conditions associated with the esophagus and upper airway. I think you should see your primary care doc first and see if an ENT doctor should evaluate your son to find out the main cause of this. Read more

Foreign body: I've done the same thing. If the feather when down you swallowing tube or esophagus, you should be fine. Your stomach will digest the feather just like any other food item. However, if the feather when down your windpipe or trachea, it would likely cause a very significant cough and tickle that would not resolve until the feather is gone. I can only get deep breath on exhale, forcing a yawn, or reaching down throat. Lying down is worse. Docs say there's enough co2 in system. What's up?
