Deep Brain Stimulation (Overview)

Deep brain stimulators are used in the treatment of parkinson's and tremors. A person is scanned with a MRI or ct frame on their head. A burrhole is then made and a stimulator wire is passed into a precise deep brain target. This is connected to a stimulator which placed under the skin. They are very expensive but do work very well.

Has anyone out there performed deep brain stimulation procedure?

Parkinson's: Dbs implantation is a neurosurgical procedure where electrodes are placed deep in the brain, and impulses are programmed to improve parkinson disease symptoms. Many pts improve dramatically, but currently used mostly for advanced pts, not responding well to their medicines. Since there's deep brain stimulation that stimulate neurons, is there deep brain "inhibition" that inhibits neurons?

Since there's deep brain stimulation that stimulate neurons, is there deep brain "inhibition" that inhibits neurons?

Yes: It is interesting that it is called " stimulation", in fact it inhibits the neuron depending upon the degree of stimulation applied. For example the involuntary movement of Parkinson's disease are controlled by "inhibition". Similarly " interstim" is the technique to stimulate to cause inhibition of bladder contractions to cure loss of urinaty control. The entire process is well understood. ...Read more

Is deep brain stimulation for depression helpful?

Is deep brain stimulation for depression helpful?

Very Likely: Dbs is the surgical placement of electrodes on 2 brain sites, which are then stimulated by electric currents. A small study suggests that dbs might be helpful for 60% of people who get treated with it - which is a good result when you are treating treatment refractory cases. Due to its invasiveness meds, transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms), and ECT should probably be considered beforehand. ...Read more
