Daytime Cough Medication
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Depends: Just like anyone, there are causes of coughing and the cough is treated the same way. A productive cough is treated with expectorant to help with clearing of secretion, and if with allergy, treated like allergy. Bronchospasms is treated with the inhalers. If there is already co2 retention, be careful with narcotic cough suppressants to avoid severe sedation. ...Read more

Honey-based: Another choice would be to use one of the honey-based cough medications. A recent study indicated that honey was as effective as many other cough preparations. Because xyrem may cause some respiratory depression, honey-based products should not contribute to any potential adverse effects. ...Read more
Coridian Hbp is the only cold and cough medication I have in the house right now. Can I give this to my 8 year old?
Yes but...: If it is day and night, you can give the day pill one pill 2-3 times a day. The night pill acetaminophen dose may be too strong, but won't hurt if given once. However, best to avoid these things for kids. I give acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever, pain, zyrtec (cetirizine) for runny nose, honey/lemon tea for cough. Rumor has it rubbing vicks on soles of feet then wearing socks helps cough. ...Read more

In the lungs nothing: Between the lungs (in the "mediastinum") there is a proliferation of scar tissue that can lead to coonstriction of the large central vessels and airways leading into the lung. The cause is often blamed on a fungal infection, but in some people the cause is unknown. ...Read more
I took the cough medication Hycodan (hydrocodone) at around 7pm. Its 10:30pm, would it be ok to take nyquil?
Cough control: Hycodan (hydrocodone) can give excellent relief of cough. Unfortunately, if you are coughing again a lot after 3-4 hours, I would say the Hycodan (hydrocodone) levels are not sufficient to relieve the cough by itself. Hopefully, taking the NyQuil at that point will hopefully give you additive benefit. I would not typically take both meds together. If your cough is increasing/getting worse, see your doctor. ...Read more
Is there any cough medication that I can take on Prozac? Also take Ritalin (methylphenidate) during the day
1yr10months boy; high temperature, convulsions earlier in the day, ear infection, possibly tonsillitis 2. Mild flu; blocked nose, cough. Medication?
Febrile seizures: If he has an ear infection it is due to the mucus which has backed up from the nose. You can help the problem by using salt water nose drops, a vaporizer, and bulb syringe to such up the mucus. Antibiotics such as Amoxil for the ear infection itself. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or advil for fever control. Warm baths when you see the temp riding rapidly or over 102 to try and prevent future seizuring. ...Read more

I think you mean antihistamines, which are used to decrease the body's reaction to allergens and some viruses such as the cold virus. They help decrease mucus production.
Other meds used for cough include: guaifenesin (expectorant), dextromethorphan (cough suppressant), and benzonatate (rx anesthetic that reduces cough reflex). Each can be found in a single ingredient form. Ask your pharmacist ...Read more
No cough medicine: The best medicine for cough is the medicine that treats the reason you are coughing. If your cough is due to asthma you need to treat asthma. If its due to reflux treat the reflux. If its due to pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis then treat the infection. I do not like treating symptoms unless I know the cause. If you have a persistent cough you need to see your doctor. ...Read more
Robitussin (guaifenesin): The Robitussin people make a great line of products. They very clearly spell out what is in each cough syrup. There are only a few ingredients to choose from and you don't want to take one that may be unnecessary. Choose a product that has what you need: cough med, decongestant, expectorant, tylenol, (acetaminophen) antihistamine. Most likely, there is a bottle that has the 2 or 3 things in it that you need. ...Read more

Antihistamines: Coughs are caused by mucous running down into your lungs from your nose. If you use an antihistamine (such as benedryl, Claritin (loratadine) or zyrtec) to dry up the post-nasal drip the cough will be better. It's best not to use a cough suppressant especially in children because if the mucous is not coughed up it can lead to pneumonia and cough suppressants can have dangerous side effects. ...Read more
