I am 21 weeks pregnant and having reddish/dark pinkish mucus discharge 2 times in the past 2 days. Had a transvaginal scan 2 days ago. Scan seems fine?
Likely okay: The fact that you had a normal ultrasound 2 days ago is good. It could be the the discharge is related to the ultrasound... if the cervix was a little fragile, it can bleed during pregnancy. I would say if continues just as discharge without cramping, likely okay, but regardless, call your doctor and let him/her know, they may want to see you sooner to make sure everything okay. What does a dark brown discharge after a pelvic exam that later turned into a clear mucus discharge mean?
Bloody discharge: The pelvic exam, especially if it included a pap smear, may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the cervix which then appeared to be a short term brown discharge. The clear mucous discharge was probably normal "fertile mucous". The discharge you are describing is common after an exam and does not mean you have a problem. ...Read more
What could explain a dark brown discharge that later turned into a clear mucus discharge following a pelvic exam?
Taking a pap smear: Scraping the surface of the cervix to take a pap smear sometimes causes a little spotting that you may see in the next few days as a brown discharge. The clear mucous discharge may be a return to normal, especially if you are midcycle and having "fertile mucous". I would not be concerned unless the brown discharge recurs or persists or develops an odor. ...Read more

Yes.: Clear mucous discharge is normal. The discharge comes from mucous glands in the vaginal and vulvar areas. The brown tinge to the mucous might NOT be normal however. It's probably coming from the endometrium, the inner lining of the uterus. Since your periods are irregular, you might have an abnormal build-up of endometrium. Please make an appt. Anal leakage: Processes that interrupt the integrity of the sphincter muscle or the hemorrhoid columns can produce anal leakage. For example, stretching of the sphincter muscle, a flareup of hemorrhoids, mucosal prolapse, or an abnormal connection called a fistula can all produce what would be termed anal leakage. Mucus is normally produced by the lining and increase production can be affected by medications or underlying disease processes. I suggest you see a surgeon for a anorectal examination. ...Read more

Hopefully nothing serious. Good luck. ...Read more
