I've had dark green loose stool off and on for about 24 hours. Is that something serious? If not what are some home remedies?
Green stool: Any conditions which cause the stool to transit too rapidly through the intestines can lead to green, moist stool. Green cabbage, lettuce, peas, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, green salad, green leaves, celery ; green beans as well as food that contains green food coloring can lead to green stool. Hi I have reflux, gastritis, lots of gas and intestinal rumbling followed with dark green loose stool that's foul smelling. Is this ibs? If not help!?
Not irritable bowel: Reflux isn't IBS, gastitis is inflammation of the stomach. Foul-smelling stools sometimes mean gastroenteritis or malabsorption. Sounds like it is time for a GI specialist or at least a visit to your usual physician for stool studies if the problem continues and even a gluten sensitivity panel with a later GI referral. Irritable bowel synd is a diagnosis of exclusion, although real and painful. ...Read more
What can cause dark green loose stools. I have been on my normal diet. No abdominal pain or fever?
Rapid transit: Our liver and gallbladder secretes a green substance called bile. It helps digest our food that contains fat/oils. This green fluid is partly responsible for the brown color of our stool. There may be instances where this green fluid either is not well absorbed in the distal small intestine (ileum) resulting in rapid transit through the intestines (especially the colon, where it may irritate). ...Read more

Not necessarily.: An infection with giardia can present with diarrhea or constipation or neither. Stool color is not a reliable way to determine the organism responsible, if any. Green is bile: When your stool passes fast through the intestinal tract the green bile is the color you see in the stool, because the bile doesn't have time to get reabsorbed and give the darker colored stool you are used to. Yellow colored diarrhea is seen in even faster traveling stools. The darker the color, the slower the transit and greater reabsorption of bile. ...Read more

I'm not sure..: ..what "constipation of loose stool" is? I presume you mean you have loose stool, but infrequently. Usually we think infrequent stool of constipation is hard and difficult to pass. The key is more fiber in your diet: whole grains, cereals, brown rice, veggies. This will solidify it. If this doesn't help, see your doc. Some testing for malabsorption may be in order. Continue good fluid intake. ...Read more

I: I would call your doctor. The green stools may not be such a big deal because that can occur when feces transits too quickly through the colon. It prevents bile from be adequately metabolised and thus the feces do not from green to their characteristic brown colored. This is usually wet or liquid. However, the yellow stools could be from an absence of bile salts (liver, gallbladder or common bile duct).
