Unlikely: This is likely normal. However, make sure to follow up with the physician who placed the IUD in a few weeks to ensure the IUD strings are still visualized as sometimes IUD can fallout. I have had a mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD for 8mths now and never had a problem till now, im having brown discharge with n heavy cramping for the past week is it normal?
Hi, I got inserted a mirena iud 13 days ago, I used to have 'normal blood' but now I have brown/ black blood. Should I be concerned about it? Also, my lower back hurts pretty bad since 3 days. What should I do?
Common: Some irregular bleeding occurs for about 2-5 weeks after Mirena insertion. The low dose of Progesterone causes the endometrial lining to thin. This triggers some shedding of the lining. Overtime this is what leads to light or absent periods with Mirena. If you are experiencing back pain consider seeing a doctor to evaluate this. Back pain is not a typical side effect of an IUD. ...Read more

I have had a Mirena IUD for over two years now with minimal issues. Lately however; I have an unbearable vaginal odour, could it be caused by the IUD?
Caused=no: The environment of your vagina/cervix/womb is moist & sheds protein & sugar bearing mucous. This is prime food for a variety of germs that feed off them. The odor likely reflects the overgrowth of some odor producing germs which may or may not trigger other symptoms. It is sometimes harder to clear these infections when you have a foreign body (IUD) in place. Time for a visit for proper dx & rx. ...Read more

Mirena IUD/menopause: The average age for "true" menopause is 54 among US women, which is when estrogen is no longer made by the ovaries. The marker for this is the level of "follicle stimulating hormone" (FSH) which is commonly at 90-100 or more (the premenopausal levels are from 2-10). Mirena has progesterone which can negate ovulation, so ask your gyn provider to measure your FSH for certainty. ...Read more

Considering getting a Mirena IUD. How long does the insertion take? How much pain can I expect to have with the insertion and in the days that follow? I haven't had any children.
Good choice: Mirena will give you consistent contraception for 5 years. Since you have not had any children, insertion may be somewhat difficult but not impossible. Your provider will be able to offer advice/suggestions on how to minimize the discomfort. Under optimum circumstances, insertion takes about 1-3 minutes or so, the discomfort, subsides quickly, in a day or so. I hope this helps. Best Wishes ...Read more

IUD and your symptoms are probably not related. You may watch and wait. If the symptoms persist for more than three weeks, it would be prudent to see a doctor.

I am getting a mirena IUD next week. Should I ask for xanax (alprazolam)? And how much ibuprofin should I take beforehand? I've never had kids and I am 20.
Not necessarily: Unless you have an established anxiety disorder, you shouldn't need xanax (alprazolam). The insertion of the iud is quick; most women will feel a quick pinch when it is implanted. Some will have irritation of their cervix which can cause cramping. I would wait until after the procedure to see whether you need ibuprofen. ...Read more

Pregnancy with IUD: Sounds like you both are not on the same page. Not typical: Mirena is a small plastic device placed inside that uterus. It secretes a small amount of Progesterone that basically acts locally on the uterine lining. Age 60 & heavy flow: If indeed you are 60 years of age. Removing the Mirena IUD was sorely needed.
