Dark brown bleeding 1 week after period ended. Doesn't usually happen, on BCP, use protection when having sex. What could be the cause of this?
Breakthrough bleedin: This may occur and indicate the need to change brands of OC. Skipped pills or the use of additional medications can cause bleeding to occur. This is usually due to ovarian dysfunction, which also is the reason fertility declines significantly after age 40. See your MD: Women over the age of 40 who begin to show symptoms of irregular bleeding should see a doctor to be evaluated for causes for bleeding such as fibroids, polyps, infection, and in the worst case...cancer.
