I had been sucking my thumb for 16 years. I already have braces (and stopped thumbsucking). Will it be able to correct my teeth problem??

You should: If everything goes well with your orthodontic treatment and you wear your retainer as prescribed by your orthodontist, I don't see any reason why your teeth should not look great. And definitely since you stopped the bad habit of sucking your thumb, I think you are on your way. Good luck. ...Read more

Do thumb-sucking and pacifiers ruin children's teeth and bites?

Do thumb-sucking and pacifiers ruin children's teeth and bites?

No: Thumbsucking and pacifier-sucking don't "ruin" teeth, but they will lead to more overbite in the baby's front teeth. Be sure these habits go away before the permanent teeth come. Throw out the pacifiers no later than when throwing out the bottles (around age 20-24 months). Since many or most kids get braces to straighten their teeth in the teen years, an overbite should be easily correctable. ...Read more

Could the saliva from my his thumb sucking cause irritation when he rubs his eyes?

Could the saliva from my his thumb sucking cause irritation when he rubs his eyes?

Skin hates drool: Excess exposure to saliva can cause skin irritation. Thumbsuckers have excess saliva/drool on their thumbs which is known to irritate the skin on the thumb as well as around the mouth. Eye rubbing, however, is brief and mostly occurs with the back of a closed fist (not the thumb), so minimal contact with the saliva occurs. In theory, it could irritate the skin, but not likely. ...Read more

Absolutely: Unlike a pacifier that can be thrown away, a thumb is permanently available. Please gently try to discourage the habit, but remember for many kids it's a crutch, and kid's can't understand the down side. You may need help physically and psychologically if habit persists past beginning of eruption of the permanent teeth. Again, be gentle. ...Read more

Pacifier better: But it is likely too late. Your child always has access to the thumb, and it can do significant harm especially if respiratory patterns and facial growth pattern is genetically problematic. Pacifier usually smaller and bears less weight than the thumb. Any sucking habit will tend to narrow the upper jaw and cause front tooth occlusion to be harmed. ...Read more

Not unusual: If twelve baby teeth, then also would have twelve permanent teeth. You went through the first phase of treatment and should expect a second phase of treatment after 28 permanent teeth are present after a "dental age" of 12 years. Ask your orthodontist for more explanation. ...Read more
