Does a normal result for the d-dimer blood test mean I don't have an abdominal aneurysm?

Does a normal result for the d-dimer blood test mean I don't have an abdominal aneurysm?

No: The way to know if you have an abdominal aoritc aneurysm or not is to get an abdominal ultrasound. A single d-dimers is not helpful. If you have a normal d-dimer it means you proabbly don't have a blood clot anywhere. ...Read more

D Dimer (Definition)

D-diner is a breakdown product from blood clots. It can be found elevated in certain conditions like pulmonary embolus (blood clot which travels to the lung) deep venous thrombosis (blood clot in deep vein of legs usually) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (diffuse clot formation from severe infection which ...Read more

Can a good d-dimer blood test result help exclude an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Can a good d-dimer blood test result help exclude an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

No: At this stage, the use of d-dimer levels for AAA screening is experimental and may be used in conjunction with other screening modalities (ultrasound / ct scans). It would not be safe to only use d-dimer levels to screen for aaa's. ...Read more

Is it possible for multiple sclerosis to cause d dimer blood test to always come back elevated?

Never: D-dimer is a marker for venous obstruction and other vascular issues, and is most helpful to me in evaluating pulmonary emboli, and brain venous thrombosis. It is NOT a marker for multiple sclerosis, and not associated with common co-morbidities. ...Read more

Would a week old bruise effect a d dimer blood test? They took blood a week ago that left a big bruise. Getting blood drawn tomorrow for ddimer

D-dimer: This test measures inflammation, and has been used as a possible preliminary test for possible blood clots. It may be elevated due to this bruise ...Read more

I tested positive for d dimer blood test but my tc showed nothing so I got sent home from ER now I'm running a high fever with intense back pain?

D-dimer: Is a rather nonspecific test and it helps mostly when is negative ruling out acute thromboembolism. In your case the test failed to rule it out and that's why you underwent CT angio. With your symptoms, you should still seek medical attention trying to find out a source that at this time and with limited information seems to be likely infectious, among others. Hope it helps. ...Read more

Due to shortness of breath, chest pains and dizziness a week after surgery I had a d dimer blood test done. Levels were slightly raised but not alarming. I have a hemotoma. Should i be concerned?

Yes: But not petrified!
The d dimer likely relates to the surgery and trauma and hematoma.
Most resolve with rest, heating pad, and a week or so.
See your surgeon if persistent, enlarging, more pain etc. ...Read more

See a doctor: The d dimer increases in pulmonary embolism. But it also increases for many other conditions. The CT should have seen anything else going on. Perhaps not pleurisy. The fever is of concern. Best see your doctor for a complete check up to determine the cause of your symptoms ...Read more

Why do my legs feel weaker than my arm? Will a d dimer blood test show a pulmonary embolism or blood clot?

Why do my legs feel weaker than my arm? Will a d dimer blood test show a pulmonary embolism or blood clot?

Different issues: Legs feeling weaker than arms may be just a part of "weakness". Because your legs feel weak is not likely to be associated with blood clots or pulmonary embolism. Please consult your doctor to evaluate the cause of weakness. ...Read more

Tested positive for d dimer blood test CT with contrast didn't show anything so they sent me home my back is killing me hurts when I take deep breath and I have a high fever and legs hurt what could be wrong?

PE: A D-Dimer is a non-specific test that is sometimes used as an indicator for something more serious when coupled with pulmonary symptoms...a pulmonary embolus (clot in the vessels of the lung). CT ruled that out. You could have influenza. You should follow up with your PCP as soon as possible. They should have run influenza A/B blood work. ...Read more

I did a blood test recently and the doctor told me my D Dimer rating was over 300. Whst could cause it to be that high?

Could be nothing: A single test result means nothing without it being related to a good history and physical. The first question would be why did you have a D-Dimer test? Test are used to confirm a diagnosis not make one. ...Read more

What does it mean if you have a blood test done and the d-dimer is positive with a count of around 4.6?

What does it mean if you have a blood test done and the d-dimer is positive with a count of around 4.6?

Limited without more: The d-dimer is a fibrin degradation product (or fdp) which represents a small protein fragment in blood after a blood clot is broken down. The value can be used to test for clotting or thrombosis problems. However, a single value or a value in isolation should not be used. Therefore, a value of 4.6 means nothing. There are factors that can cause false readings. ...Read more

What would be some reasons I could be coughing up blood? I am 10 weeks pregnant, and have a history of PEs. I am on lovenox once a day. I went to the ER last night and my d dimer test was .51. Every other blood test was normal. I am still coughing up some

This worries me: Hi. With a history of recurrent PE, you pregnant and coughing up blood is obviously concerning for both you and the fetus. Your D dimer is barely elevated, but with your history and current status, I'd say your risk is high for PE. Unfortunately, diagnostics use either high dose X-ray or radioactivity, and are frowned upon in pregnancy. You're followed by HROB, I'm certain. Some tough decisions. ...Read more

Is a D-DIMER FEU blood test better test than D-DIMER DDU blood test for exclusion of DVT and/or pulmonary embolism? If no why?

Ddimer: If d-dimer is negative, it certainly rules out dvt. If d-dimer is positive, it does not alone confirm a clot. If positive d-dimer, you will need additional test including ultrasound ...Read more

Blood work came back positive for d-dimer, had ultrasound for clot, negative. Should i be concerned about the positive test? What else could cause this

False positives: The d-dimer test is very good at ruling out a blood clot. In other words, if the test is negative then the chance of actually having a clot is extremely low. However, it has a high rate of false positive results. This means additional testing is needed to determine if there really is a clot. These tests are much more specific and accurate. If the ultrasound was negative, then you are probably ok. ...Read more

How useful is a d-dimer test in ruling out a blood clot in the lower leg?

Useful: A negative result of D-Dimer has a 97%+ predictive value in ruling out deep vein thrombosis.

I have had 2 normal d dimer tests in the past 2 weeks. Is it safe to assume I don't have a blood clot, even if my leg is sore?

I have had 2 normal d dimer tests in the past 2 weeks. Is it safe to assume I don't have a blood clot, even if my leg is sore?

Look at risk: You have to ask the reason why the d dimer is being done. In all likelihood, there is no blood clot as the work up is negative. Like a previous question, the risk and presentation has to be evaluated first and then a study is done to work it up. I don't know why the test was done, but in all likelihood the importance of a negative test is more to point negative but positive test is more a problem. ...Read more
