I have a transplant kidney. My CMV test is positive. I used ganciclovir for 14 days, but what does it do?

Needs clarification: If your CMV antibody (IgG) test was (+), it indicates that you had a prior exposure to the virus but does not mean an active infection. In most renal transplant recipients, anti-viral medication is usually given to prevent CMV reactivation. If your blood PCR test was (+) for CMV, it indicates active presence of the virus in the blood and its tx requires ganciclovir(IV) or valganciclovir (oral). ...Read more

If one has the CMV virus for how is this person contagious?

If one has the CMV virus for how is this person contagious?

Hard to say: CMV is one of the infections that can achieve a latent or hibernating state & reactivate periodically. Day care center studies have documented 30-70% urine or saliva prevalence in 1-3yo. Adults also shed the virus periodically after infection. Regular hygienic practices should be followed in all age groups at any time & those recovering from CMV should not be treated any differently. ...Read more

Probably none: 50-80% of the population has been infected with cmv, mostly during childhood. A few people develop a mono like illness, e.g., fever, sore throat; but most are asymptomatic. Unless your kid has immune deficiency or an inter-current serious illness there is no reason to worry.
