Cymbalta Versus Effexor
Different compounds: Cymbalta and Effexor (venlafaxine) XR are different chemical compounds which are both used to treat depression and anxiety disorders; however, they share a similar "mechanism of action", in that both are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (snri's). Cymbalta is also used in the management of fibromyalgia and (in europe, at least) urinary incontinence. Their side-effect profiles are also different. ...Read more

I've been taking cymbalta 120mg/day for years. It's now very expensive. Is generic Effexor (venlafaxine) an alternative especially for the chronic shoulder pain?
Effexor (venlafaxine): Yes Effexor (venlafaxine) shares many of the same properties as Cymbalta and is much cheaper. Discuss with your doctor who will likely be willing to try it. You have to slowly go up icon the dosing, so don't give up too early if not helping on the starter dose. Your doctor can help you set up a dosing sequence tailor made for you. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Switching from Effexor (venlafaxine) to cymbalta reduced my drowsiness, after 2 month on cymbalta again i'm drowsy.Tapered dose from 60mg to 30mg last week.Regards?
Check MTHFR: Genotype 677 ; 1298. Almost 100% of people treated for depression for extended periods of time are positive for these genes. It is related to low folate (folic acid) ; B12 levels which causes fatigue.Getting treated can help all your meds work much better because your body will finally be able to make its own serotonin, nor-epi, ; dopamine.Tx is safer than placebo-15mg of l-methylfolate (folic acid), p5p 50mg, 4mg b12. ...Read more
Effexor (venlafaxine) is known to raise blood pressure...Cymbalta not quite so ..Is this accurate?
Correct: While all serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (snris) can raise blood pressure, generally those with more activity on norepinephrine levels (effexor, pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) savella) tend to have more effect on blood pressure than cymbalta, which has a 1:1 effect on norepinephrine and serotonin. ...Read more
Does Cymbalta cause weight gain. Also your thoughts on Effexor (venlafaxine). Don't want to gain weight and am currently on Wellburin.tx?
Be careful!: Even non-pregnant people need to be very cautious combining Wellbutrin (bupropion) with either of those medications - seizure risk is increased as well as other risks. All anti-depressant seem to result in weight gain for some folk - even ones that cause loss in others. In your case - definitely work w/ your OBGYN to be safe. Try to find a diet plan that will be good for you, your baby and weight control. ...Read more
It is said that cymbalta's serotonin to norephinephrine is 1:1..Does that make it an even ratio...And is it then stronger/weaker than effexor/pristiqe?
Even: Cymbalta has a balanced/even effect on serotonin and norepinephrine, 1:1 ratio of blocking reuptake of both molecules. Technically, that would make it weaker than effexor, (venlafaxine) which has roughly 3:1 norepinephrine to serotonin reuptake inhibition . Clinically however, they are both beneficial for many similar diagnoses, it's just a matter of finding out which is better for each individual. Good luck! ...Read more

How can snri's such as Cymbalta and Effexor (venlafaxine) control anxiety if they work on norepinephrine..would not this increase anxiety?
Very right you are!: In my practice I never use these medications, also Wellburtrin and Pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) for anxiety treatment precisely for this reason . And it's not a hypothetical concern as time after time they worsen anxiety in my humble opinion. SSRI's are much more reliable save Paxil (too short acting leading to withdrawal effects). Take care. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I tried celexa, effexor, cymbalta, pristiq, (desvenlafaxine) lexapro, zoloft, wellbutrin, which barely helped. What else could i try? How do u feel about paxil?
Agree w/Dr. Buggie: I agree with dr. Buggie about the need for psychiatric evaluation and ongoing treatment. Wellbutrin does not help with anxiety. Paxil (paroxetine) is a reasonable choice, but whether it's right for you i cannot say. You're also on Adderall xr, which can exacerbate anxiety in some. Psychotherapy is an important part of treatment for anxiety also -- but you didn't mention pursuing that. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

They are: Not the same but in the same category as SNRI'S (Seratonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors). So bottom line, since everyone is different, you would have to just try one. I will say this: watch out for withdrawal symptoms or side effects such as headaches, sweats, shakes, and irritability. If that happens you have to wean off extremeve slowly always under psychiatric supervision. ...Read more
Tapering effexor (venlafaxine) xr- dropped to 150mg from 225mg on saturday, and added 30mg duloxetine. Anxious, shaky hands, and nauseous. Is this withdrawal or serotonin syndrome? How long will this last?
Med interaction: Effexor (venlafaxine) + duloxetine interact to increase risk for serotonin syndrome. Call prescribing doctor for advice or go to urgent care for help if symptoms don't improve or get worse. See: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/serotonin-syndrome/basics/definition/CON-20028946 I hope this helps. ...Read moreSee 5 more doctor answers
