Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! the image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more

Whats better for diagnosing pancreatic cancer.... Ct scan or mri? I've had normal ultrasound and CT scan with contrast. Still worried.

Whats better for diagnosing pancreatic cancer.... Ct scan or mri? I've had normal ultrasound and CT scan with contrast. Still worried.

Why worried?: Why are you worried? Do you have symptoms or abnormal labs? If the ct was normal and used a specific pancreas protocol, then an MRI of the pan creas may be the best next test. Since it does not use radiation, there is little risk for you. ...Read more

Whats better for diagnosing pancreatic cancer? Ct scan or mri? 34yr male. I've had normal ultrasound and CT scan with contrast. Still worried.

CT, ERCP, MRCP: Thin-slice (3 mm) ct abdomen yields fine detail of pancreatic structures... Blood tests including tumor markers: ca-19-9, ca-15-3, and cea can alert the clinician for ca. Also, ERCP w/ ductal brushings (though its endoscopy) can search for malignancy. Finally, mrcp may add to the clinical picture, but 64-bit ct is slowly encroaching on the former's superiority. ...Read more

What is the difference between MRI contrast and CT scan contrast ?

What is the difference between MRI contrast and CT scan contrast ?

Not same: Mri contast gadolinium does not contain iodine while ct contrast contains iodine. An allergic reaction to ct contrast does not mean that you will have a reaction to gadolinium during your MRI scan. True allergies to the MRI contrast are exrtremely rare; however, you may still experience some symptoms like feeling lightheaded or nauseated due to the injection. Good luck with the exam! ...Read more

I had CT scan done which showed enlarged pineal gland and was ordered MRI with contrast to interrogate it. Mri showed nothing but partial empty sella with no mention of pineal gland on report. Why?

I had CT scan done which showed enlarged pineal gland and was ordered MRI with contrast to interrogate it. Mri showed nothing but partial empty sella with no mention of pineal gland on report. Why?

You sure not pit: Uitary. The pituitary gland sits in the sella turcica and not the pineal gland. Make sure to get a copy of the report. If the cat scan does report a problem with the pineal gland then you may need to call the radiology department at the hospital where the MRI was performed to make sure the MRI addresses this gland. Good luck and well wishes. ...Read more

I've had 2 mri's, one contrast & a CT scan. As well as numerous blood work done. Nothings showing up. I'm still dizzy w/ neuro symtpoms, 8 mos now?

Migraine or epilepsy: Both of these conditions can cause symptoms with no evidence of structural abnormality on MRI or ct scan. Would be useful to know what type of symptoms you have, how old you are and what other medical conditions you suffer from in making a better diagnosis. ...Read more

I have hypothyroidism. Is it safe to have a CT scan w/ contrast? If an MRI alternative? I also have a Harrington Rod in my back. Any alternative.

Thyroid and CT: If your hypothyroidism is appropriately treated there is nothing to worry about. If you do not have renal impairment, then the use of contrast should be safe. Every test, including a CT, is a balance of risks and benefits. If you need the CT, then go with your doctor's advice. ...Read more

Would a Brain MRI W/O Contrast & a CT Scan with and W/O Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

MRI: A MRI with contrast is sufficient to detect evidence of a brain tumor. If there is any question as to whether a brain tumor is present or not, one can opt to repeat the MRI of the brain with contrast three months after the last MRI brain was obtained. ...Read more

Would a Brain MRI without Contrast & a CT Scan with and without Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

Would a Brain MRI without Contrast & a CT Scan with and without Contrast show a brain tumor causing symptoms? Worried that it could have been missed.

No symptomatic tumor: It is a pretty safe bet that MRI together with contrast CT can exclude a symptomatic tumor (mass) in the head. That does not mean all causes of headache or neurologic complaint are seen. Only your practitioner can give more advice to "put your mind at ease" and further direct your diagnostic journey. ...Read more

If im in the ER and they wanna check for a brain tumor by doing a CT scan. Can i request an MRI without contrast instead or is that not an option?

Yes/No: A ct scan has the advantage of being fast (and cheap from the insurance companies standpoint) and gives a good enough resolution as a screening test. You can request an MRI without contrast, however, if something is found, you need to get another MRI scan which is a longer, and more expensive, time commitment. ...Read more

Do CT scan/mri's when they check for tinnitus require contrast? Will they check all the vessels in my brain? Or is it just normal mri?

Contrast is expected: Brain scans (mri or ct) looking for tumors or aneurysms frequently use contrast. Since causes of tinnitus include these possibilities, i would anticipate the use of contrast. ...Read more

Ct Scan (Definition)

Ct scan uses data from a beam of xrays and reconstructs a cross sectional image of your body. It is a high dose of xrays and used only when the benefits outweigh the risk. Cancer risk is 1 in 500 in children. Also using iodinated contrast might cause transient renal failure in about 5% of patients. (contrast induced nepropathy) most do not explain this to the patient as ...Read more
