Can a CT scan of the neck without contrast give meaningful information on a lump? I am breastfeeding.

Can a CT scan of the neck without contrast give meaningful information on a lump? I am breastfeeding.

Yes: It can definitely help. A ct with contrast is better. If you're worried about breast feeding with the contrast, its not an issue. The amount that is actually eventually absorbed by the baby from the stomach is extremely small. Much less than we give babies actually getting a ct scan. ...Read more

Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! The image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more

I recently had a Head and Neck CT scan. One without and one with contrast. What are the chances a brain tumor causing symptoms was missed?

I recently had a Head and Neck CT scan. One without and one with contrast. What are the chances a brain tumor causing symptoms was missed?

Very remote: CT scan will pick up a brain tumor easily although it is not the best test for small (tiny) tumors. But then you would not have any symptoms from a small lesion. What does 'diffuse severe attenuation of the left vertebral artery" mean on a neck ct scan with contrast? Could it be cause of previous spontaneous arterial brachial clot or subclavian clot?

What does 'diffuse severe attenuation of the left vertebral artery" mean on a neck ct scan with contrast? Could it be cause of previous spontaneous arterial brachial clot or subclavian clot?

Hard to: Say with certainty without access to the images and report, but most commonly this is simply due to a developmental/congenital anatomic variation whereby one vertebral artery is very small. This would not be the cause of a clot elsewhere. ...Read more

My doctor ordered a CT scan with contrast. I am on thyroid meds and worried about the dye/contrast. What can I do?

No worries: There is not a concern, if the ct is evaluating other parts of your body, including the neck. The contrast will not cause a problem with your thyroid or your medications. But, you don't want to do this type of ct scan, if your doctor later plans on evaluating the thyroid itself with a radioactive uptake nuclear medicine scan because it can interfere with that and skew the results. ...Read more

Can chest CT scan puts me at the higher risk of thyroid cancer? Chest CT was done with contrast. Can contrast used in chest CT damage thyroid?

Can chest CT scan puts me at the higher risk of thyroid cancer? Chest CT was done with contrast. Can contrast used in chest CT damage thyroid?

Yes, no: There is some evidence that chest ct could put one at higher risk for thyroid cancer - but almost all of these suggest that it is dose dependent and that it would take repeated scans/exposure to elevate the risk. You can request protective covering for thyroid if need additional scans. The contrast used will not cause thyroid damage or disease. ...Read more

I had a ct scan of neck, they saw small hypoechoic nodule in thyroid and an enlarged lymphnode, is it cancer?

Thyroid nodules: This is a very common finding, and the fact that it is small suggests lower risk. Usually under 1 cm they don't bother to biopsy, but perhaps with an enlarged LN in the area it might need it. Fine Needle aspiration biopsy can be safely and easily done perhaps with US guidance and a pathologist to evaluate the sample to ensure it is sufficient and triaged to the appropriate next steps.
