Ct Neck Without Contrast
Can a CT scan of the neck without contrast give meaningful information on a lump? I am breastfeeding.
Yes: It can definitely help. A ct with contrast is better. If you're worried about breast feeding with the contrast, its not an issue. The amount that is actually eventually absorbed by the baby from the stomach is extremely small. Much less than we give babies actually getting a ct scan. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! the image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more
Many things: A radiologist looks at lymph nodes, the airway, blood vessels, glands, muscles, esophagus, upper lungs, bones, epiglottis, larynx, and a portion of the brain and sinuses. This test is ideal for evaluating cancer, infection, inflammation, enlarged lymph nodes, and trauma among other things. ...Read more
If a head & neck CT with contrast didn't show anything 6 months ago, what is the likelihood it would now? Still having pain and still no diagnosis.
Unlikely: Repeating a head CT would probably not show anything different if it was clear 6 mos ago. If the pain is severe your doctors might want to consider MRI which shows the soft tissue of the brain better than CT and gives you no radiation exposure. I hope you get some relief soon. ...Read more
Ear infx 2.5 months. Was told all kinds of infx. nothing really work. Pinching, achy feeling around ear/neck when flares up. Should i get contrast CT?
See Ear Doctor: An ear infection lasting that long should be evaluated by an ear specialist first, because you need a good exam of the ear with a microscope. This is one of the most helpful tools for figuring out what is going on in an ear. You may just need a special culture or the ear/neck pain might be something else altogether. Let an ear doctor look and decide if you need a CT... Usually don't need contrast. ...Read more
Sonogram shows 2.2cm, (2) 1cm in neck lymph's. CT contrast scan doesn't identify lymph's. I'm told its inflammation. CT does not pick up inflammation?
CT can: identify soft tissue inflammation, and can identify lymph nodes. Hard to speculate as to why the CT scan didn't show the lymph nodes, but I suspect if they looked normal the radiologist decided not to mention them. The only way to be certain is to have the radiologist look at the CT and ultrasound side by side and reconcile the discrepancy. ...Read more
I have noticed bilateral supraclavicular bulges, most notably when arms are extended or shoulders pulled back. CT scan with contrast of neck showed nothing. Bloodword normal. What could this be?
Groin & cervical enlarged ln's that are visible just looking at me. Neck CT w/ contrast said they are not enlarged. Why/ how?Doc didn't get groin ct.
Need to ask your ...: Physician about these suspected enlarged lymph nodes. A ct scan of the abdomen and pelvis may be useful to further evaluate this finding depending on a physical exam. A biopsy may be necessary to make an exact diagnosis, but it is too early to make that determination yet. ...Read more

A "hypo-dense foci in the left thyroid lobe" was found during CT w/ contrast of head and neck. What does this mean?
Hypo:Low; Hyper:High: Most medical terminology just descriptive, not implying any great understanding or insight. Foci means “spot”, location. Go slow, look up terms. The thyroid is a cystic gland, i.e. Cells which manufacture & secrete proteins into the water around the cells & producing accumulations of extracellular material. Lower density than surrounding tissue c/c/w cyst, just ? Larger than usual, ca ??? likely. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Hard lump in neck CT scan with contrast came back unremarkable, what can this be? Can this still be cancer? With clear ct?

Have been having pressure in right side of head behind ear for 2 months with dizziness and stiff neck on that side. Ct w/o contast?
Scan, yes: Because you are young the statistics shift toward less serious problems. However, a lesion of some type involving the mastoid or skull base near the mastoid might give you these symptoms. So, yes; you should have scan. Type of scan questionable. For bone CT is best. For other structure MR is best. Talk to your doctor. Contrast helps but we avoid in some conditions. ...Read more
