Have IgG and IgM for CMV but PCR not detected. Pos rmsf IgM neg igg. Bands in CSF mri/white matter foci. Many symptoms possible ms. No real answers?

Uncertainty: I am unclear as to what is really going on. Appears that you have immune activity in the central nervous system. You have some cross-reactivity in the serum for CMV and rickettsial infection. Don't think that need to add another disease to the picture. Best to discuss with your doctor or get a second opinion from another specialist.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (Definition)

Polymerase chain reaction is a method of finding a specific piece of dna and copying it over and over again until there is enough to study. The technique allows a scientist to detect very small amounts of dna in a swab sample then reproduce enough of it to study it. It is very sensisitive for detecting the presence of certain bacteria and is also used in doing other ...Read more

Had HSV DNA PCR test with CSF? Negative. Also had HSV 1/2 antibody (IgM), IFA with reflex to Titer, CSF. Negative. Can I still have HSV 1 or 2?

Had HSV DNA PCR test with CSF? Negative. Also had HSV 1/2 antibody (IgM), IFA with reflex to Titer, CSF. Negative. Can I still have HSV 1 or 2?

No HSV in CNS: With these tests, you're obviously under a doctor's care, maybe including an infectious diseases specialist or neurologist. They can answer these questions best. But these results effectively rule out HSV infection of your central nervous system. Something else is causing the problem. That said, the HSV IgM test is notoriously unreliable. You probably also had an IgG test, probably negative.

What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

Similar to blood: A CSF culture is when you take a sample of CSF (usually from a lumbar puncture which samples the CSF from the spinal canal in the lower back - so yes a bit more difficult to perform but still pretty routine) and culture it to see if there are bacteria (or sometimes viruses) growing in it, usually to look for meningitis. It takes the same amount of time as a blood culture (48 hours).

What is the definition or description of: CSF culture?

What is the definition or description of: CSF culture?

Meningitis: In order to uncover the culprit in a case of meningitis, spinal fluid is obtained, and an attempt to grow the organism in the lab follows (culture).

What is a PCR test?

What is a PCR test?

PCR test: There are several answers but the most universal is the polymerase chain reaction test used to multiply dna sampling to determine pathogens and also for use in legal specimen procedures. It can also be used for human genetic testing for disease incidence and susceptibility.

What causes bands to show up in csf?

What causes bands to show up in csf?

Two things: You can have bands (immature neutrophils or acute inflammatory cells) in the CSF from blood contamination or acute inflammation in the CSF from diseases such as meningitis.

What is the definition or description of: csf?

CSF: Cerebrospinal fluid is the clear colorless fluid produced in the choroid plexus in the brain, and acts as a cushion or a buffer for the brain & spinal cord.

What is the definition or description of: pcr?

PCR: Polymerase chain reaction is used in molecular biology to amplify copies of dna. It is used in dna cloning for sequencing, functional analysis of genes, identification of genetic finger prints, diagnosis of hereditary diseases & infectious diseases.

What are the steps for HIV testing using a pcr?

What are the steps for HIV testing using a pcr?

Steps?: I'm not sure what you're asking. The "steps" are that you have your doctor order it, go to the lab, hold our your arm, and get the blood drawn. The more complicated question has to do with the indication for the test: who needs it and when. If that's what you're asking, please repost the question.

Why after lambar puncture procedur the CSF rhinorrhea was stopped?

May be temporary: By removing fluid, the pressure in the CSF compartment decreases, so the leak may stop for a bit.

What sort of disorder is CSF otorrhea?

A serious condition: CSF is cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. CSF otorrhea is when the fluid is draining out of your ear. It is considered a sign of a basilar skull fracture. It can also be associated with leakage thru the nose which is refered to as CSF rhinorrhea.

Is HIV PCR DNA test after 9 weeks conclusive enough?

Is HIV PCR DNA test after 9 weeks conclusive enough?

HIV PCR testing: Yes. This excellent new way of testing viruses is very sensitive. It is thought that the HIV pcr dna test can narrow the window to 14 to 21 days post exposure. A negative test at 9 weeks post exposure means you do not have hiv.

What is the definition or description of: CSF protein?

What is the definition or description of: CSF protein?

Lab test: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein is a routine test on fluid obtained from a spinal tap, performed under suspicion that disease or infection of the central nervous system may be present. The results are interpreted with other findings for diagnostic purposes.
