Csf Glucose Low (Overview)

CSF (cerebrospinal fluid or spinal fluid) glucose low is a test result meaning the amount of glucose (the sugar used by cells in the body) in the spinal fluid is lower than normal. Low CSF glucose may mean that bacteria may be present and using up the glucose.

Meningitis diagnosis: Medical diagnosis of any condition, including meningitis, rarely depends on any one lab test but also overall clinical presentation, symptoms, exam findings, etc. Viral meningitis often has mostly neutrophils in CSF early on, becoming mononuclear cells in a few days. It would be unusual to have very low CSF glucose in viral meningitis, but slightly low often is OK. Discuss w/ patient's doctor (s). ...Read more

Clear CSF, protein and glucose within normal range, could they still find anything wrong?

CSF: Many things can be checked in the csf. This will vary on the reason why the test is ordered in the first place. Oligoclonal bands and immunoglobulin synthesis rate may be checked in ms; viral and fungal cultures, lyme's titers for suspected infections; cell count, cytology and flow cytometry useful in many other disorders. Also, clear refers to transparency, color should be colorless. ...Read more

Lab Values: These are results from CSF (cerebral spinal fluid) tests that identify values that tell your physician whether you have normal or abnormal levels of Immune Globulin (igg), whether the ratio compared to your blood is correct; adequate protein (albumin) and sugar in the csf. All of these help to diagnose what type of problem may be occurring in your body and nervous system especially. ...Read more

Adnorm. Blood & cfs results: high: CSF protein-47, high cfs albumin-30.9; low total protein-5.7, low gamma globulin-.5, low IgG quantitative -621 worry?

CSF: Some experts consider CSF protein levels to be normal if the value is equal to or below your age in years. I don't think in your case there is a reason to worry. Other CSF components are important as well. Check with your physician to see if there is any reasons to worry. Hope you feel well soon. ...Read more

What exactly is CSF rhinorrhea?

A leaky brain: A CSF rhinorrhea occurs if there is an opening of the brain covering (dura) & the thin bone separating the nose from the base of the brain. Any other diseases that o bands show up in CSF not blood, besides MS?

Yes: Examples of other diseases that can cause oligoclonal bands in the CSF include infections (eg, nervous system Lyme disease), autoimmune diseases, brain tumors, and lymphoproliferative diseases. Given how many diseases can result in oligoclonal bands in the CSF, the diagnostic utility of this finding is limited. Thanks for trusting HealthTap! ...Read more

Would you consider total cells count = 12 in csf normal for spinal tap?

Too high: There shouldn't be more than 3-4 WBC per mm3 CSF and 12 per mm3 is definitely too high. It isn't necessarily a serious or dangerous finding; several pretty minor health problems could cause it. However, it could be serious and it definitely isn't something you can safely ignore. Discuss with the doctor (s) who advised your spinal tap. Good luck! ...Read more

What does effacement of csf at craniojuntion mean for someone with chiari 1?

Can't say: Specifically without more information or viewing the images, but it is likely referring to mass effect due to the downward displacement of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum seen in Chiari 1. Normally csf surrounds the cervical cord, the cerebellar tonsils in Chiari occupy this space and "efface" the csf space., so this can create an obstruction to normal csf flow or press on cord. ...Read more

Blood Sugar (Definition)

The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis.
