What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

What test are done on CSF sample? Which ones you in the direction

Many: It depends on what the spinal tap is being done for. If it's to see if there is meningitis, than cultures are done as well as analyzing the cells and even rapid bacterial testing kind of like strep testing. If it's for multiple sclerosis or other neurological conditons, than completely different studies are done. If the person is HIV (+) than even different studies are done. ...Read more
