What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

What exactly is a CSF culture & what is its purpose? Is it difficult to perform and does it take longer than blood cultures for a result to come back?

Similar to blood: A CSF culture is when you take a sample of CSF (usually from a lumbar puncture which samples the CSF from the spinal canal in the lower back - so yes a bit more difficult to perform but still pretty routine) and culture it to see if there are bacteria (or sometimes viruses) growing in it, usually to look for meningitis. It takes the same amount of time as a blood culture (48 hours). ...Read more

I had a spinal puncture done and the results said CSF/serum oligoclonal bands negative and CSF Oligoclonal bands 0 bands. does that mean i have ms?

I had a spinal puncture done and the results said CSF/serum oligoclonal bands negative and CSF Oligoclonal bands 0 bands. does that mean i have ms?

Multiple sclerosis: Presence of CSF oligoclonal bands is consistent and normally diagnostic of multiple sclerosis in the right circumstances. The absence does not rule out MS and the diagnosis has to be based on clinical findings and MRI results. There may also be some ethnic differentiation of oligoclonal bands present in patients with MS. you can review the article below http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2015/217961 ...Read more

Have IgG and IgM for CMV but PCR not detected. Pos rmsf IgM neg igg. Bands in CSF mri/white matter foci. Many symptoms possible ms.. No real answers?

Uncertainty: I am unclear as to what is really going on. Appears that you have immune activity in the central nervous system. You have some cross-reactivity in the serum for CMV and rickettsial infection. Don't think that need to add another disease to the picture. Best to discuss with your doctor or get a second opinion from another specialist. ...Read more

Had HSV DNA PCR test with CSF? Negative. Also had HSV 1/2 antibody (IgM), IFA with reflex to Titer, CSF. Negative. Can I still have HSV 1 or 2?

No HSV in CNS: With these tests, you're obviously under a doctor's care, maybe including an infectious diseases specialist or neurologist. They can answer these questions best. But these results effectively rule out HSV infection of your central nervous system. Something else is causing the problem. That said, the HSV IgM test is notoriously unreliable. You probably also had an IgG test, probably negative. ...Read more

Sciatica plus?: You have described different complaints plus test results, some confused: what is "high csf"? Was the MRI a spine study? Pelvic pain and leg pain sound like a spine problem. See a neurologist who specializes in nerve and muscle disease. Ask about nerve conduction tests. ...Read more
