Creatinine clearance is used in clinical practice to give an estimate of overall kidney function, or glomerular filtration rate. Generally normal is considered 100 or above, but it goes down every year and elderly patients may have low clearance which is not abnormal.

A renal biopsy may be needed, to get a diagnosis and a prognosis if the blood work does not give a diagnosis of your p. The 'pain' i guess you are referring to is that to do the test accurately requires collecting every drop of urine in a special bottle given by the lab for 24 hours.
