Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) has been used as both a food and a medicine for centuries. It is native to North America and was used by Native Americans to treat bladder and kidney diseases. Early settlers from England learned to use the berry both raw and cooked for many ailments, including appetite loss, stomach problems, blood disorders, and scurvy, caused by not getting enough vitamin C. Cranberry is best known for preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs), commonly caused by bacteria known as Escherichia coli (E. coli). At first, scientists thought cranberry worked by making urine acidic enough to kill the bacteria. It might: A number of laboratory and animal studies suggest that mangosteen has significant anti-inflammatory effects. And a few small-scale studies in humans indicate that the juice helps reduce blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). Mangosteen is marketed as a supplement, both as a juice and in capsule form. ...Read more

Real cranberries: Seems the real thing is better than the juice. For my female patients i recommend a dozen or so dry cranberries daily, in a salad, cereal or by themselves. Excellent source of antioxidants also. Good for early bladder symptoms, but a kidney infection is a truly serious deep seated infection that needs antibiotics asap.
