Creatine Kinase (Definition)

Creatine kinase is an enzyme found in muscles throughout the body. There are different subtypes of the enzyme, called isoforms, which predominate in different organs. For instance, the isoform in skeletal muscles is different from that which is most heavily found in the heart muscle. A blood tests detects levels of this in the body, for example if ...Read more

Muscle injury?: Are you taking any medications like statins? Did you have any injury to muscles? You should consult your doctor who ordered the test as he likely has the information needed for proper interpretation of the results. All lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context. See this site for more info. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003503.htm. ...Read more

Should i be worried with a 365 CPK , normally it is 120, i started to left weights between blood test, 70 yrs old on atorvastatin?

Should i be worried with a 365 CPK , normally it is 120, i started to left weights between blood test, 70 yrs old on atorvastatin?

High CPK: With your increased CPK on statins, i would stop them and have you see your physician. Statins can cause muscle destruction leading to an elevated cpk. Tell your doctor if you have muscle pains or weakness. You and your physician may decide that you need an alternative therapy for your high cholesterol levels and may need to stop the statin. ...Read more

I've done blood test today and my Creatine Kinase level shown is 322 IU/L. What does that indicate? How can I reduce this CK level to normal range?

Muscle issue: Creatine Kinase is an enzyme in muscles and any issue affecting the muscles, including exercise, can raise CK levels. You need to address the cause of the elevation. You may consult this site and then discuss the matter with your doctor who ordered the test. http://www.mayomedicallaboratories.com/test-catalog/Clinical+and+Interpretive/8336 ...Read more

What blood test beside CPK and aldolase are good test for muscle breakdown or dystrophy?

What blood test beside CPK and aldolase are good test for muscle breakdown or dystrophy?

Skeletal muscle : Ck or CPK is the best test for muscle breakdown. Alsolsae can be occasionally elevated in patients with myositis who have normal ck levels. Ldh isoenzymes, transaminases, & ck isoenzymea are other tests, but unlikely to be of value if CPK & aldolase are normal. Measuring inflammatory markers & serological studies may help narrow the possibilities. Sometimes a nerve study +/- biopsy are needed. ...Read more

No: High c3 is not expected in lupus. More likely it could be normal or low. CPK is high in some connective tissue diseases such as poly myosotis, dermatomyositis, and overlap syndrome of myosotis and lupus. It most definitely is not low. ...Read more
