How to open up to family counselors/therapists?

Find the right one: A good counselor or therapist will spend some time making you feel comfortable. You can prepare yourself by getting ready--make a few notes about what you want to talk about, and make the appointment at a time when you aren't rushed so that you can put your full attention into the visit. Turn off your cell phone! remember that talking about these things is uncomfortable for most people! ...Read more

Any therapists on here? I have a memory of being raped as a kid.Still not sure if it was a dream or real? It's all fuzzy to me. I wish I knew

Difficult to tell: This is a very difficult question to answer, because dreams can sometimes seem very real, but you also don't want to make assumptions or jump to conclusions. I would suggest, if possible, talking to people who knew you when you were a kid and seeing if they can shed light on the fuzzy memories or dream you are remembering. ...Read more

Need GYN exam: I'm so sorry for what happened. You should see a GYN to check for pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, any injuries etc and to collect medical evidence if you decide to press legal charges. Have a trusted friend or family member go with you for support. Glad you have a therapist. The gynecologist is there to help you. See: http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/azhealthtopics/a/rapehealsurvive.htm Take care of yourself to start the healing process. I hope this helps. ...Read more

Talking about rapes, abortion to therapist, feels like I am being raped and abused all over again, feeling so violated how can I make this easier

Therapy.: Psychotherapy is an art. The therapist needs to balance dealing with painful issues that the patient may want to avoid AND the need to not overwhelm the patient by going too deeply or quickly in sessions. This requires sensitivity on the therapists' part. It would be my hope that you are working with a provider who is experienced in working with sexual assault victims. Horrible flashbacks, PTSD, raped numerous times, past therapist said to masturbate to get over this, can't this, just brings on more flashback & pain?

Would encourage you: to work with a therapist who has expertise in PTSD. Masturbation is not likely to cause healing. How can I deal with increased PTSD symptoms when trying to start dating for the first time since my rape? Already seeing therapist and psychiatrist, but am looking for some help until I see my therapist again.

PTSD: A lot of this depends upon where you are in your treatment of avoidance. If you're at the point where you're ready to date, perhaps going to a public place, double dating, or meeting the date at the location could help you feel safer. If you're not quite at this point yet in your therapy you can always gracefully bow out of the date and reschedule it for a later time. Process with therapist. ...Read more

Medications: Of all that you mentioned, except for very rare exceptions, psychiatrists are the only ones with a medical degree who can prescribe medications.
