Your friend is lucky to have someone who is concerned about her health and well being. After some research into the subject, the two main harmful effects of doing this are respiratory (lung) and GI (stomach) issues. The respiratory concerns are impaired breathing which can lead to respiratory distress and even pneumonia, both of which can be deadly. The GI issues are mainly vomiting and abdominal pain, and esophagitis.

Allergies: This sounds like you have some allergies. Dust in homes can be tainted with lead dust, cockroach dander, pet dander, cigarrette smoke, among other toxins and allergic offenders. You need a whopping dose of antihistamine now, say 10 mg cetirizine by mouth. I am worried a little about your chest pain, especially if you have asthma. But why?: Interesting question. According to poison control, no. But the ingredients are camphor and menthol both of which have been used in cooking for centuries. It appears that doses of 50 mg camphor are safe ( way more than would be fond in cooking) 2000 mg will likely produce serious symptoms and 4000 mg is possibly fatal. I don't really see any benefit to eating vicks. ...Read more

Safe but worthless: The primary reason for congestion in infants is small nasal passages that swell in response to irritants, like the fumes put off by Vicks/hairspray/smoke/dust/perfume/etc. I never advise it below school age. It may be safe but I find it aggravates the problem in young infants.A good nasal wash out with saline and removing airborne irritants works better. ...Read more
