On sick leave, narcotic pain meds, taking more than prescribed to get effect of no pain, scared to tell doc feel like I am addicted without them.am I?
Take as advised: Narcotic pain meds are NOT "pixie dust"--they are not intended to get you to "no pain," just a tolerable level so you can function--you have something wrong (trauma / surgery / etc.), or you would not be prescribed them. Talk to your Dr about combination therapy--often can add other non-narcotic meds to optimize relief and have less risk of dependence/addiction. Talk to your Dr about this. ...Read more
What over-the-counter pain medication can I take after having a laparoscopy? Vicodin makes me feel sick so i want to take an alternative.
Two Options: 1-acetaminophen (aka tylenol) 2-nsaids (ibuprofen, naprosyn, (naproxen) advil, motrin, aleve). Most people find the nsaids more beneficial--in fact, i advise my patients to take them "around-the-clock" for the first few days. I'm not addicted but I think I need some help getting off of Percocet and OxyContin after knee surg. What can a md prescribe to help?
Depends: It really depends on how long you have been taking the medication on a daily basis and how much you have been taking. Not everyone who takes opioids becomes physiologically dependent and has withdrawal upon discontinuation of the medication. The best thing to try is gradually decreasing the daily dosage until you can stop altogether. Start breaking in 1/2 for a week or so, then 1/4 and so on. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Addictionologist: The symptoms of Vicodin (opioid) withdrawal are pretty severe physically and emotionally. However, they are not life threatening. It is best to do it with a trained addictionologist. It has to be tapered down and certain non-addictive medications need to be used to minimize some of the withdrawal like diarrhea, craps, pain and a sleep disturbance. Good Luck! Most people quit drugs so can you! ...Read more
